• Materials

Customer safety is our number one priority. All of our products are designed to meet legal requirements for safety in the countries where we operate, as well as best standards in the industry. We are committed to using safe materials in our products.

Bioplastics - We have used bioplastics in our mobile phone products since 2013. Bioplastics are extracted from plants and offer many advantages over traditional plastic, such as using less petroleum (a non-renewable resource) and greatly reducing pollution and damage to the environment. Our bioplastic contains more than 30% castor oil, and helps reduce CO2 emissions by 62.6%. In 2016, Huawei cut CO2 emissions by 2,250 tons with the use of bioplastics. In 2017, we have used bio-based plastic in many of the products such as P10, P10 plus, Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

Hazardous substances pose a danger to people, other living things, and the environment. As environmental problems escalate alongside new advances in digital technology, we are discovering that more and more substances used in the manufacture of electronics can have harmful effects on our health and the world around us. Huawei complies with all laws and regulations regarding the use of hazardous substances. And we go one step further: We actively restrict the use of hazardous substances that are not yet banned, but have a significant effect on our environment. Since 2009, we have banned RoHS-restricted substances in all Huawei Devices. Since 2016, Huawei has banned the use of six harmful substances in our mobile phones, tablets, and wearables. These substances include brominated flame retardants, chlorinated flame retardants, PVC, phthalates, antimony trioxide, and beryllium and beryllium compounds. We have also begun using halogen-free PCB to fabricate safer, more environmentally friendly circuits.

Soy Ink - Our soy ink is composed of 10% soybean oil, which is an edible and renewable oil from plants. Soybean-based ink helps reduce consumption of other oils and non-renewable resources, and is far more biodegradable than traditional inks

In 2013, Huawei signed an agreement with the American Soybean Association to use soy ink in our product packaging. Starting in 2014, we now use soy ink for all device packaging.

  • Green Packaging

To reduce our impact on forest ecosystems, Huawei uses FSC-certified paper to package our products. We require the same across our entire supply chain to ensure that all boxes come from responsibly managed and sustainable forests.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization committed to promoting responsible forest management worldwide. FSC certification involves monitoring and review of suppliers by an independent third party to ensure that the forestry, transportation, and processing of timber meet FSC standards for sustainable and responsible forest management, thereby protecting the environment and ecological biodiversity.
