Backing up your phone/tablet

Backing up protects your valuable data in case your device is damaged or stolen. To back up your data, you can choose from five ways:Phone/Tablet Clone, Huawei Share, Cloud backup, HiSuite, or External storage.

1.1 Phone/Tablet Clone

Quickly and easily transfers basic data from an old phone to a new one. For more information about Phone Clone, see Use Phone Clone to Move Data to Your New Device.

Supported data

Contacts, messages (common SMSs, advanced SMSs, and MMSs), call logs, calendar events, images, audio (voice and call recordings, and music), videos, documents, and apps.

To use Phone Clonewith a compatible iPhone, download the app from the App Store.

1.2 Huawei Share

Quickly transfers images, videos, documents, and apps between HUAWEI phones, tablets, and computers. It relies on Bluetooth to detect and connect nearby devices that support Huawei Share, and uses Wi-Fi for a quick transfer without having to consume mobile data. For more information about Huawei Share, see Share Files Between Phones with Huawei Share.

Supported data

Images, videos, documents, albums, file manager, home screen, music, contacts, calendar, Gallery, Notepad, WPS, and websites.

Home screen refers to home screen apps. Notepad refers to the Notepad data.

Example 1: Share images

Supported on Windows, and macOS versions 10.8 to 10.14.

  1. Connect your phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Go to Huawei Share settings on your phone and turn on Huawei Share and Computer Share.
  3. Make a note of your device name as well as the username and password for computer access.
  4. On Windows: go to This PC (Computer) > Network.

On macOS: go to Finder > Go to > Network.

  5. On your computer, double-click the name of your phone and enter the username and password from step 3.
  6. Open an album to view or edit images, or to copy them to your computer. To copy files from computer to phone, simply copy them to the shared folder. It is also possible to edit files directly inside the shared folder, and the files can be displayed on both your phone and computer.

Example 2: Transfer images with Huawei Share OneHop

  1. On your phone, open the notification panel by swiping down from the status bar, then enable NFC. To send an image to an older computer, open the image you wish to send, then tap your computer's Huawei Share icon with your phone.
  2. For new-generation computers, the NFC antennae are built under the touchpad and have covered over 90% of the touchpad area. To send an image to these computers, open the image, tap the touchpad, which will open OneHop. These ways of transferring images won't affect the image quality.

It is recommended that you use Huawei Share to share files and apps. Huawei Share is supported only when you see the share option when you touch and hold the file or app you want to share. The directory structure of files remains unchanged after transferring using Huawei Share.

1.3 Cloud backup

Backs up phone/tablet data to the Cloud via Wi-Fi and transfers it to a new device with a single touch. For example, back up device photos to the Cloud by toggling on the sync switches or using Cloud backup. For more information about Cloud backup, see How to use Cloud backup.

Supported data

Gallery, Contacts, Calendar, Notepad, Wi-Fisettings, Recorder, Messaging, Browser, Blocked settings, AI Tips, Optimiser, Clock, Weather, Camera, and Settings, plus some app data and additional apps (excluding twin apps).

  • In Cloud versions earlier than 11.1.7, up to three successful backup records can be stored on the same device. In versions 11.1.7 and later, one successful backup record can be kept for free users on the same device while three successful backup records can be kept for paid users on the same device. After the backup record limit is reached, each new backup record automatically deletes and replaces the oldest (or only) one. The deleted backup record cannot be restored.
  • If Cloud Gallery is enabled on your device, Gallery images and videos will be backed up to the Cloud in that way only. Cloud backup will not duplicate the backup.

1.4 HiSuite

Backs up phone/tablet data to a computer via USB cable or Wi-Fi. You can simply go to the data backup screen, select the data you wish to back up, and follow the onscreen instructions to finish backup. If connecting via USB cable, HiSuite starts automatically. For more information about HiSuite, see Data backup using HiSuite.

Supported data

Gallery, Contacts, Messaging, Recorder, Notepad, Wi-Fi settings, Optimiser, AI Tips, Clock, Weather, Blocked settings, app data, home screen, third-party apps, and more.

  • Security features have been enhanced since HiSuite versions 10.0.0.510 to prevent unauthorised access to your data: connecting a phone/tablet to a computer requires a verification code.
  • For more information about system requirements, visit https://consumer.huawei.com/en/support/hisuite/.

1.5 External storage

Free up space on your device by saving data to your memory card or USB storage. No Internet connection is needed. For more information about backing up to external storage, see Back Up with an External Storage Device.

Supported data

Gallery, Contacts, Messaging, Recorder, Notepad, Wi-Fi settings, Optimiser, AI Tips, Clock, Weather, Blocked settings, app data, home screen, third-party apps, and more.

Example: Back up images to USB storage

  1. Connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable. On your phone, swipe down from the status bar to open the notification panel, then go to Settings > More, and set Use USB to to Transfer photos.
  2. The computer will automatically download the driver for your device. To view your phone's storage, on your computer, double-click the drive letter matching your phone name.
    • When backing up to a memory card, you can protect your data by setting a password, which will enable backup encryption. Make sure to note down this password because no one, including you, will be able to access or restore from protected data without it.
    • Supported memory cards (if your phone supports memory cards): MicroSD and NM.
    • Supported USB storage (requires OTG cable to connect to your device): USB flash drives, card readers, and devices with an inserted memory card.
