The CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group and Chairman of Huawei Devices, Richard Yu, shared some interesting plans with the public. He predicted that the company will trump Apple in two or three years in order to become the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer. He didn’t stop there though, he also said that they plan to jump over Samsung in five years as well, and become the number 1 smartphone OEM in the world. Now, these are extremely ambitious plans, and it will surely going to be interesting to see what happens. Either way, Huawei is aiming to increase their smartphone shipments by 30% compared to last year, and according to Mr. Yu, the company will actually work further on their partnership with the U.S.-based carriers. Huawei actually managed to increase brand awareness in the U.S. thanks to the Nexus 6P, which was manufactured by Huawei.
Huawei said a while back that they’ve managed to ship out 108 million smartphones in 2015, though according to this report, that number comes down to 104.1 million devices. Either way, Huawei has sold 68.1 million smartphones in 2014, which means they managed to increase their shipments by over 50% in 2015. Now, looking at market percentages, Huawei si currently third-placed with 7.3% of the market, while Apple holds 15.9%. Samsung is way ahead, and currently holds 22.5% of the smartphone market. That being said, Huawei’s plans are not impossible, but they’re certainly optimistic and not easy to achieve. It will be interesting to see if Huawei can fulfill their goal for 2016 and actually increase their shipments by 30%. If they manage to achieve that, we’ll see what happens in the years that will follow. One thing is for sure, these are exciting times for mobile technology, and we’re looking forward to the next chapter.
