Huawei HiLink Ignites IoT Development

[August 10, 2019, Dongguan] At this year's Huawei Developer Conference (HDC), Shao Yang, Chief Strategy Officer of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, envisioned how HiLink, LiteOS, and IoT chips would make IoT solution development simpler and more efficient. Next-generation smartphones will connect cars, homes and offices, providing consumers with the smart experience for all scenarios. Alongside this rapid increase in globally connectable and per capita devices, IoT technologies that span wireless, wired, narrowband, and broadband, now make it possible to connect these hundreds of billions of devices.

Huawei HiLink Ignites IoT Development

At the Smart Home Forum, 11 experts from the Huawei Consumer BG IoT Product Line met with developers, industry experts, partners, media, and thought leaders from around the world. They revealed Huawei's all-scenario smart home service strategy and business model upgrade, leading industrial design and user experience solutions, efficient enablement of the developer platform, and the new HiLink platform.

Shao Yang believes that rapid IoT development spurs the upgrade and transformation of traditional industries, but their performance has yet to catch up. On the one hand, IoT ecosystem platforms have different standards and thus cannot integrate products of different brands and categories. For example, there are over 50 categories, 150 connectable nodes, and 2000 brands of smart home devices on the market. This lack of standardization affects user accessibility. On the other hand, consumers report poor user experience with current IoT devices. While over 10 million connectable devices are sold every year, less than 15% of them are connected to the platform after consumer recognition, app activation, and device activation. For vendors, the high cost of smart product hardware, R&D, and operations hinders them from getting value out of their business.

For the ultimate user experience, Huawei's HiLink ecosystem includes three enablement suites: the open HiLink platform, the intelligent LiteOS operating system, and the dedicated IoT chip. Together, they make IoT upgrade and product development simpler and more efficient.

After more than three years of development, Huawei's HiLink platform now has an SDK open to all categories and connection protocols, and boasts 30+ million mobile smart life app users on a unified portal for AI smart voice assistance. Huawei has been continuously enhancing HiLink's linkage engine and user experience in extreme scenarios. Users can easily find and connect devices, control multi-mode devices at multiple ends, and link complete scenarios.

LiteOS is developed by Huawei's 2012 Labs. The dedicated IoT operating system has an open-source kernel and many capability sharing libraries for consumer business. In addition, the embedded Maple JS engine makes applications easier to develop. Developers use the LiteOS to complete intelligent upgrading on the terminal side quickly and on demand.

In addition, HiSilicon has developed a full range of wired/wireless and narrowband IoT chips, empowering HiLink with core capabilities.

Shao Yang named the three enablement suites as fundamental drivers for IoT development. Combined Huawei's high-quality products and strong R&D strengths, they will transform the IoT industry into a huge market of immense value.

At HDC's Smart Home Forum this year, Huawei introduced the HiLink business model and the four core IoT topics as related to the HiLink portal, connection, and ecosystem.

Huawei HiLink Ignites IoT Development

Product partners select the partnership model customized to their own strategies, technical strengths, and products. Each model receives different support in product design and development, launch, and marketing by Huawei and partner channels.

Works with HUAWEI HiLink is open to all product partners. Products that comply with HiLink connection protocol requirements can integrate into the HiLink ecosystem and access IoT device resources on a 1+8 basis.

Huawei selects appropriate products among those certified, and includes these products in its ecosystem product plan as required by channel and scenario. These products are given additional marketing and channel support.

Huawei invites close ecosystem partners with popular consumer products to participate in Huawei's smart selection plan. Both parties will jointly innovate and define ecosystem products, and align their GTM, channel, and marketing resources to deliver industry- and market-leading products.

For products, Huawei adheres to an open and cooperative business model. As enabler, Huawei shares the capabilities that developers need most to truly empower them.

Portal Enablement --- HiLink's Leading Industrial Design and User Experience Solution

Delivering the Ultimate Interactive Experience to Consumers

By mid-2019, Huawei's HiLink platform has more than 30 million registered users, 600 partners, and more than 1000 certified products covering 100+ life scenarios. With its unique advantage on the user portal side, Huawei has been accumulating capabilities in connection technologies, consumer electronics, and chip technologies. Huawei integrates partners in its HiLink ecosystem and focuses on products for all scenarios.

In the industrial design field, Huawei's 15-year-old CBC UX design team is a veteran in human factor and user research, (human-computer interaction) HCI, interaction, and visual applications. Huawei's EMUI is constantly upgraded to improve user experience and risen to UI industry leader. For Huawei's partners, the component-centric application design standardizes the user experience among products from different vendors for ease of use and lower learning curves.

As for voice enablement, people will interact with machines in the future through AI. Huawei builds capabilities into its platform to enable ecosystem partners to customize intentions, skills, and dialog libraries while carrying out visual design. The service wizard features JavaScript for quick online development, commissioning, and release of customized skills. The voice SDK includes noise reduction, wakeup, and security, providing development assurance for partners.

Connection Enablement ---·HiLink Provides Diverse Connection Technologies

Ensuring fast, secure, and smart IoT experience

Huawei SDK's interconnection mode now extends from Wi-Fi to general gateways such as ZigBee and Bluetooth. LiteOS standard modules are pre-integrated with HiLink SDK for better capability sharing. Existing equipment is activated through cloud interconnection and user experience is improved through edge protocol conversion on routers. Huawei has completed interconnection with multiple vendors. HiLink now supports access of air conditioners and will support more brands and types of products in the future. Consumers can use the “Link Accounts” function of Huawei’s Smart Home app to achieve cloud interconnection.

Huawei's ZigBee and Bluetooth Mesh gateways for the HiLink ecosystem let gateway vendors quickly build unified standard gateways, reduce access complexity and time, and improve access quality. Better device accessibility means that partners can quickly connect to the HiLink ecosystem through authentication modules and universal gateways.

For security, Huawei is both collaborator and participant in global security regulations and processes. Cyber-security capabilities meet global standards throughout the product lifecycle. Huawei-developed chips and OS are secure on both chip and system levels. Together with Huawei routers, smart speakers and other devices, they provide comprehensive protection for intelligent devices on home networks.

HiLink aims to connect a third of China's home appliances in the next three years, providing 300+ million families with the highest-quality experience for any scenario.
