Huawei unveiled its latest products and strategy for the upcoming year as scheduled, but on a virtual livestream, rather than at a physical event. Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, delivered a keynote address entitled "Together Connecting Possibilities", and introduced the company's "1+8+N" Seamless AI Life initiative in the process, a vast connected ecosystem bolstered by Huawei's innovative distributed technology. Huawei has deployed a series of privacy security measures oriented to all life scenarios, tailored to diverse, intelligent lifestyle needs, and in accordance with the promise "Privacy, under your control". This commitment to user empowerment in personal data management, ensures that users have and can exercise the right to know and control their own data while enjoying unprecedented mobile convenience.

"Super-device" users, exercising unmatched control over their data

When smart devices join Huawei's distributed system to transform into "super-devices", users are able to control the capability sharing between phones and IoT products, and modify the settings at any time, to access and control their personal data with ease and effectiveness. Every aspect of this framework is in strict compliance with Huawei's four bedrock conditions for user privacy: transparent and controllable, beneficial to users, secure, and legally compliant.

On-device intelligent suggestions- and decision-making capabilities

Huawei phones play a crucial part in the company's "1+8+N" Seamless AI Life strategy, forming the "one" focal point within the larger ecosystem. Using the Kirin 970 as a springboard, which incorporated a dedicated and independent NPU module, the latest Kirin 990 5G chipset comes equipped with enhanced on-device AI computing supported by an optimized dual-NPU architecture. As a result, on-device suggestions- and decision-making is responsive and intelligent in a whole new way. Best yet, all on-device data is processed and stored locally on the phone, freeing users of ever-present worries associated with data leakage during transmission or in on-cloud storage.

On-device storage of biometric data

As users have grown more accustomed to unlocking devices and making payments with biometric data, such as by fingerprint, facial identification, iris or voiceprint recognition, many remain unaware that most device makers retain the data on the cloud. If over the course of data transfer or on-cloud storage, user data is accidentally leaked or unlawfully obtained by malicious actors, it can cause immeasurable personal and financial harm. Huawei takes a different approach, holding itself to much stricter standards than those that are pervasive across the industry, and insists that all biometric data must be kept on the user's phone only. This means that all of your personal data is securely encrypted and stored within a trusted zone on your phone, and stays there under lock and key, leaving no opportunity for privacy disclosure.

When all of your devices have upgraded to "super-devices", they are made to comply with Huawei's stringent security standards. Huawei has established an isolated trusted execution environment (TEE) operating system, which runs outside of Android's open environment, and whose microkernel design utilizes proprietary "formal verification" methods to tailor security and trustworthiness when appropriate, as certified by CC EAL5+. Under this architecture, the end-to-end processing of users' biometric data, including management, decryption, verification and storage, happens in a completely isolated environment. The open Android framework is only used to initiate information authentication and result collection, and not provided with access to the data itself.

HiSilicon's iTrustee TEE operating system, which was established via the ARM® TrustZone® chipset, serves as an illustrative example of this principle in practice. On each and every Huawei "super-device", data generated from biometric information in Huawei Pay, Secure Key, SkyTone and a myriad of other privacy-sensitive features, is closely monitored by iTrustee, with detailed measures in place to ensure user privacy and data security. EMUI also supports a wide range of TEEs that are built into other chipsets.

Upon its release on August 9, 2019, EMUI10 was hailed as the "groundwork for full-connected, intelligent living in the future."
