The phone's battery drains quickly and has a short standby time

The length of the phone's standby time relates to its battery capacity, phone settings, as well as your usage habits. The following suggestions should help you extend your phone's standby time.

Suggestions for daily use:

  1. Reduce the media volume.
  2. Use the Internet in a place with a good signal.
  3. Open the recent tasks screen and clear unnecessary background apps regularly.

  4. Restart your phone once a week to clear the accumulated junk files created by background apps.
  5. Update your phone to the latest system version. Newer versions are better at optimising power consumption and system stability.

System updates will not erase your personal data, but it is recommended that you back up any important data before installing an update.

The following settings can also help you save power:

  1. Use Optimise battery usage.

Open Settings and go to Battery > Optimise battery usage for the system to detect features that consume a lot of power. You can then decide whether to perform optimisation.

  2. Check Battery usage.

Open Settings and search for and access Battery usage. In the Software list, if you find some apps are consuming a lot of power, you can enable Power consumption alert and modify settings in App launch to reduce power consumption.

If some apps are not frequently used but consume a lot of power, uninstall them to prevent excessive power consumption.

    • In App launch, disable Manage automatically, and enable or disable Auto-launch, Secondary launch, and Run in background as required.
    • For EMUI 5.X, the relevant setting is Close apps after screen lock.

Note: Changing these settings may affect the notifications that you receive from apps running in the background.

  3. Adjust screen settings.
    • Open Settings and search for and access Screen resolution. Touch Screen resolution and enable Smart resolution. Alternatively, disable Smart resolution and select a lower resolution under Custom.

For EMUI 5.X: Enable or disable Low resolution power saving as required.

    • If your phone provides Darken interface colours or Dark mode, enable this feature to save power.
  4. Enable Power saving mode.
Open Settings and search for and access Power saving mode.
    • Enable Power saving mode or Ultra power saving to extend the standby duration.

    • If your phone supports Performance mode, it is recommended that you turn it off to prevent excessive power consumption.
  5. Adjust network connection settings.
    • Open Settings, search for and access Stay connected when device sleeps, and then disable the feature to prevent your phone from consuming excess power when it's in Sleep mode.
    • Open Settings, search for and access Data saver or Smart data saver, and turn on the switch to restrict background apps from using mobile data. This will reduce both data usage and power consumption.

For EMUI 5.X and EMUI 8.X:

Mobile data: Swipe down from the status bar to open the notification panel, touch and hold Mobile data, and then disable Mobile data always on.

Wi-Fi: Swipe down from the status bar to open the notification panel, touch and hold Wi-Fi, go to Configure > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep, and then select Only when plugged in.

Note: Changing these settings will affect the way that apps access the Internet when your phone is connected to a mobile data network.
