HUAWEI LAUNCHES POP-UP GALLERY TO CELEBRATE WINNERS OF COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHY INITIATIVE
· Winning imagery from the Reveal the Real You community photography initiative to be on display in East London from 08 – 12 March
· Free portrait studio session with The Photocopy Club to take place on Saturday from 12-5pm
March 5th 2018, London - Huawei today announced the launch of a new pop-up gallery in the heart of East London to celebrate the winners of the Huawei and Dazed Reveal The Real You community-led photography initiative. Open to the public from Thursday 8th March - Sunday 11th March at Top Office Machines, 133-135 Bethnal Green Road E2 7DG, the gallery will feature imagery from Anthony Shintai Amao, Kat Collins and Sahvannah Amaka, all shot on the Huawei P10 smartphone, in addition to a book which has been produced to document the project and partnership with Dazed.
The Reveal The Real You initiative saw up and coming photographers from around the UK challenged to document and celebrate communities and causes they feel passionately about through a series of 10 striking images. From capturing the underground breakdancing scene in Birmingham to showcasing South London’s young and innovative jazz musicians and celebrating the careful motion and order that lies at the heart of dance, the three prize winners being showcased in the pop-up gallery were chosen by a panel of expert independent judges and highlight how different communities come together through technology, art, culture, music and dance. The three winners, chosen from a shortlist of 20 final submissions, were each awarded a £10,000 bursary to donate to a community cause or initiative of their choice – Break Mission, Shoreditch Youth Dance and The Camberwell After School Project.
To celebrate the culmination of the initiative, the free pop-up gallery will be an opportunity for locals to explore the winning shots and learn more about the inspirational stories of people who are empowered by Huawei technology.
The gallery will also be running a portrait photography studio from 12pm - 5pm on Saturday 10th March in collaboration with The Photocopy Club. Taking inspiration from the Reveal the Real You campaign and the powerful photography produced by the three winners, the pop-up portrait studio will combine technology and creativity to create a piece of art in real time.
Visitors to the gallery will be invited to have their portrait taken on a Huawei P10 in the studio, which will then be printed out and added to a wall in the gallery as part of a growing art exhibition. Each participant will get their own black & white Xerox portrait to take away with them, and at the end of the day all the portraits will be made in to a zine.
Reveal the Real You Winners:
· Anthony Shintai Amao: A committed breakdancer himself, Anthony has captured portraits of the Break Mission Crew to provide an inside look into the world of Birmingham’s underground Breakin’ scene.
Cause: The £10,000 bursary will be awarded to Break Mission, a community hip-hop events education initiative that brings people together to experience a cultural understanding of what the hip-hop community is about and raises awareness of homelessness in the local area.
· Sahvannah Amaka: With music in her blood, Sahvannah’s images demonstrate how the spirit of jazz continues to thrive in London, revealing the truths of her peers as they make their way in today’s cultural landscape.
Cause: The £10,000 bursary will be awarded to Camberwell’s After School Project which provides childcare for lone, single, studying and working parents in Southwark for kids aged 2 to 11 years.
· Kat Collings: Shining a light on her local dance group, Shoreditch Youth Dance (SYD), Kat’s images celebrate artists as people by capturing them in the places they live, rather than the familiarity of the stage.
Cause: The £10,000 bursary will be awarded to SYD to help them continue to mentor and support young creative leaders.
Andrew Garrihy, CMO for Huawei Europe commented: “Technology empowers people to achieve and do more. To demonstrate this, we partnered with Dazed, challenging some of today’s most up-and-coming photographers to celebrate the communities and causes they care most about, using the Huawei P10; a dual lens camera phone built on the century-long legacy of Leica, the original street photography pioneers.
“Our finalists have shown just how powerful a tool the smartphone is in capturing the world around us and we’re thrilled Huawei technology has given people a platform to tell their stories, shining a light on many of the important issues impacting young people today.”
