The sound quality of HUAWEI earbuds is poor

If the sound quality on your HUAWEI earbuds is poor, perform the following steps:

  1. Update the earbuds' firmware to the latest version.
  2. The audio quality deteriorates slightly after active noise cancellation (ANC) is enabled: A small number of music signals sharing similar bands with background noise are treated as noise signals, which can affect sound quality. This is a common issue with ANC earbuds. FreeBuds series earbuds have been designed to minimize the effects of noise cancellation on audio quality. It is normal for audio quality to deteriorate when ANC is enabled. This does not indicate an issue with your device.

FreeBuds SE 3/FreeBuds SE 2/FreeBuds SE earbuds do not support noise cancellation.

  3. Select a pair of ear tips that best fits your ears and adjust the position of the earbuds to ensure a snug, comfortable fit.

    • For FreeBuds SE 3/FreeBuds SE 2/FreeBuds 5/FreeBuds Lipstick/FreeBuds 4/FreeBuds 3 earbuds, which do not include ear tips, adjust the earbuds as needed to ensure the best possible fit. For FreeBuds Studio headphones, adjust the width of the head beam and ear cups as needed to ensure an optimal fit and sound quality.
    • For WATCH Buds, refer to the guide to ensure an optimal fit and listening experience.
  4. Open the AI Life app, access the earbuds card, go to Settings, and enable Sync volume with phone/tablet.
  5. It is recommended that you clean the earbuds once a week. Use a clean and dry cotton swab with a pointed tip to gently remove the dirt and earwax from the mesh, and then use a soft cloth to clean the mesh. This is to prevent the mesh from being blocked by foreign objects, and ensure optimal sound quality.
  6. Select your desired sound effect:
    • For FreeBuds Pro 4/FreeBuds Pro 3 earbuds, you can choose between Default (HUAWEI SOUND), Bass boost, Treble boost, Voices, Symphony, and Hi-Fi Live modes, and customize the sound effects to meet your needs.
    • For FreeBuds 6i earbuds, you can choose between Default, Bass boost, Treble boost, Voices, Symphony, and Hi-Fi Live modes, and customize the sound effects to meet your needs.
    • For FreeBuds Pro 2 earbuds, you can choose between Default (Co-created with Devialet), Voices, Treble boost, and Bass boost modes, and customize the sound effects to meet your needs.
    • For FreeBuds SE 3/FreeLace Pro 2/FreeBuds SE 2/FreeBuds 5/WATCH Buds earbuds, you can choose between Default, Bass boost, Treble boost, and Voices modes. FreeLace Pro 2 earbuds support customized sound effects.
    • Multi-EQ sound effects are available on FreeBuds 5i/FreeBuds Lipstick/FreeBuds 4/FreeBuds Studio, including the Bass boost and Treble boost modes.
  7. Audio file quality and media player performance may fail to meet your requirements. If so, try switching to an HD or lossless audio file. If the audio quality from a certain audio player, phone, or tablet is poor, try using another audio player, phone, or tablet instead.
  8. When the phone is used in environments with strong interference, the AAC bit rate and L2HC bit rate will decrease to the lowest level, causing the sound quality to deteriorate. Avoid using the earbuds in environments with strong interference.
  9. Poor audio quality due to the call channel being occupied:
    • Poor audio quality when playing music and making calls/sending and receiving voice messages at the same time: Calls/Voice messages are transmitted at a low bit rate, while music is transmitted at a high bit rate. When you play music and make calls/send and receive voice messages at the same time, low-bit-rate transmission is adopted for both music and calls/voice messages, resulting in poor audio quality. It is recommended that you pause your music before making calls or sending and receiving voice messages, and resume listening after finishing the call or voice message.
    • Poor audio quality when the earbuds are connected to a computer: Troubleshoot according to the following steps.
      1. The Bluetooth bandwidth may be occupied by other Bluetooth devices connected to the computer, resulting in poor audio quality. To ensure good audio quality, disconnect any other Bluetooth devices and connect only the earbuds to the computer via Bluetooth.
      2. Modify the audio playback device in the Control Panel of the computer or download the Bluetooth driver for the laptop model from the official laptop website, update the driver, and restart the computer. The following uses Windows 10 as an example:
        1. Open Control Panel.
        2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback. Set Bluetooth earbud name Stereo as the default device, and Bluetooth earbud name Hands-Free AG Audio as the default communication device. Then click OK.
    • Poor audio quality during gameplay: For smooth gameplay, the earbuds or speakers connected to your phone will use the call channel when you use the in-game voice call feature, which may cause audio quality to deteriorate. This will not affect gameplay in most games.

If the issue persists, take your device and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
