Third-party apps stop downloading files, playing music, or playing live content after my HUAWEI phone screen is off for a period of time

Perform the following to troubleshoot:

1. Make sure that the network connection is normal

  1. Enable Stay connected when device sleeps.

Open Settings, and search for and tap Stay connected when device sleeps to enable it. (Note that using this feature will consume mobile data when no Wi-Fi network is available.) Your phone may be disconnected from the network when it is in Sleep mode, and therefore cannot access the Internet.

  1. Enable the network access permission for the app in question and disable Data saver.
    • Go to Phone Manager/Optimiser > Mobile data > Networked apps, find the app, and select Mobile data and Wi-Fi.
    • Go to Phone Manager/Optimiser > Mobile data > Data saver/Smart data saver, and disable Data saver/Smart data saver. If you do not want to disable Data saver/Smart data saver, you can find and select the app in the EXEMPTIONS list, and enable the switch.
  2. Enable Download with mobile data in the app.

When your device is connected to a mobile network, you need to enable Download with mobile data for certain apps to download files using mobile data. To do so via a browser, open the browser, tap / in the lower right corner, go to Me > Settings > Download settings > Download with mobile data, and select Allow.

2. Enable the permission for the third-party app to run in the background

If the app is not allowed to run in the background, or is cleared from the background, it will not run in the background.

  1. Allow the app to start automatically and run in the background.

Go to Phone Manager > App launchOptimiser > > remaining > App launch, disable Manage automatically for the app, and enable Auto-launch, Secondary launch, and Run in background.

  1. Lock the app on the recent tasks screen to keep the app running in the background.

Go to the recent tasks screen, find the app in question, and swipe down on the app or tap the lock icon. When the lock icon is displayed in the upper right corner of the app, it indicates that the app is locked. To unlock the app, swipe down again.

3. Disable the battery optimisation features

  1. Disable Power saving mode by going to Settings > Battery.
  2. Allow the app to Ignore battery optimisation. To do so, open Settings, search for and access Battery optimisation, tap the small triangle, select All apps, find the app, and set it to Don't allow.
  3. The app may stop running when the device prompts a high power consumption alert and you manually close the app. In this case, select Ignore when a high power consumption alert is displayed.

4. If the issue persists

If the issue persists, back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to an authorised Huawei Customer Service Centre for assistance. We will do our best to address your needs.
