My HUAWEI phone/tablet freezes or experiences lag

Freezing/lag after system update

After a system update, the system will optimise the apps on your device for one week. During this period, the device load will be heavy, possibly causing your device to freeze or lag. To reduce the chance of freezing or lag following a system update, you are recommended, following an update, to charge the device with the screen off for at least 2 hours. After one week, check whether the device has stopped freezing or lagging.

It is recommended that you update your phone/tablet to HarmonyOS 3.0. HarmonyOS 3.0 uses the industry-leading SuperHold technology to classify and reserve memory space, reducing memory conflicts between apps and prioritising memory for the app in use, to ensure user experience is as smooth as possible.

Freezing/lag after Power saving mode is enabled

To disable Power saving mode, go to Settings > Battery > Power saving mode/Ultra power saving mode. Keeping the battery level above 20% is also recommended. If Power saving mode is on or the battery level is too low, the device will turn off features to prolong your battery life.

Freezing/lag when the device is charging or overheats

Your device features an overheating protection mechanism that prevents it from getting too hot by reducing system performance. To keep your device working normally, avoid using it while it is charging, and reduce the screen brightness and disable unnecessary and power-intensive apps, as well as features such as Bluetooth and NFC.

Freezing/lag when there are too many files in the memory card or when the memory card does not function as normal

  1. Too many files may slow down the read and write speeds. It is recommended that you regularly clear the memory card to ensure at least 10% space is always free, or back up important data and format the memory card.
  2. A faulty memory card may also slow down read and write speeds. If a message is displayed indicating that the memory card is not functioning as normal, replace the memory card as soon as possible.
  3. For the best performance, it is recommended that you use internal storage as the default location for apps and files.

Freezing/lag due to some third-party apps

  1. Uninstall any third-party management apps installed on your device, as they tend to conflict with Phone Manager/Tablet Manager provided by your device.
  2. If you wish to check if a particular third-party app is hindering performance, you can contact the Huawei customer service hotline or the app developers.

Frame/lag when the memory is insufficient

If the available memory is less than 20% of the total memory, the performance of your phone/tablet might degrade.

  1. An easy way to close all running apps is to restart your device.
  2. Then, open Phone Manager/Tablet Manager, touch Cleanup, and follow the onscreen instructions to delete unnecessary files and/or uninstall rarely used apps. For optimal app performance, it is recommended that you keep at least 20% free storage space on your device.
  3. To uninstall a rarely used app, touch and hold the app icon, and select Uninstall.

If you find that the storage space of your device is no longer sufficient, check out the memory update promotion that Huawei has launched for some models. If you're interested, please back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to an authorised Huawei Customer Service Centre for more information.

Other scenarios

  1. Update the system

Make sure that the system and apps are all updated to their latest versions. New versions will optimise the device performance.

To update the system, go to Settings > Software update >Check for updates, or go to Update in the My HUAWEI app.

  2. Restore to factory settings

If the above steps have not resolved the problem, you can reset your device. Make sure you back up important data before you do this.

If the issue persists

Back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to an authorised Huawei Customer Service Centre for assistance.
