Forgot the App lock password

If you forget your lock screen password, refer to Forgot the lock screen password or unable to unlock the device using the lock screen password.

App lock allows you to lock phone apps to prevent unauthorised access. If you forget the password of a locked app, perform the following:

1 Access the locked app using your fingerprint

If you have enabled access to a locked app using your fingerprint, search for App lock in Settings and use your fingerprint to access the App Lock screen. Touch Settings in the upper right corner of the screen to change the password or disable App lock.

On some devices running EMUI 9.1/Magic UI 2.1 or later, you may still need to enter the password before you can change the password or disable App lock. In this case, you can toggle off the switch for the locked app to ensure that it is not locked.

2 Check whether the Forgot password? option is displayed on the App lock screen

  • If the Forgot password? option is displayed at the bottom of the app lock screen, touch Forgot password? to enter the answer to the security question and reset the password.
  • If there is no Forgot password? option, enter the lock screen password. If you cannot unlock the app using the lock screen password, it indicates that you have not set a security question.

3 If the issue persists, perform the following operations:

  • EMUI 8.1 and earlier: Uninstall and reinstall the locked app to disable App lock. However, for apps that cannot be uninstalled (such as HUAWEI AppGallery), you need to back up your data and perform Reset phone to unlock the apps. (The data of locked apps cannot be backed up.)
  • EMUI 8.2/Magic UI 2.X and later: Uninstalling and reinstalling a locked app will not disable App lock. You can only perform Reset phone to unlock the app. Back up important data before the Reset phone, search for and access Reset phone in Settings, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the operation.
