Configure clean boot on a HUAWEI Windows Computer

A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a fault is caused by a third-party app or service.

After performing a clean boot, some third-party app services will be suspended. To restore the services, exit clean boot mode and enable all suspended services.

Procedure:

Perform a clean boot

Exit clean boot mode

Determine the cause after performing a clean boot

Perform a clean boot

  1. Log in to the computer using an account with administrator permissions.

To check whether the current account has administrator permissions: On the taskbar at the bottom, click and go to Settings > Accounts. If the current account is displayed as Administrator, the account has administrator permissions. If the current account does not have administrator permissions, switch to an account with administrator permissions.

    Click to go to Accounts.

  2. On the taskbar, click the search box, enter "system configuration", and select Run as administrator.

  3. Click Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, go to Suspend all > Apply > OK, and click Restart as prompted to restart the computer.

    • This operation will disable the fingerprint feature. Before performing the operation, remember the computer password and PIN.
    • This operation may cause the PIN to be unavailable after the computer restarts. As a result, you cannot enter the system. Therefore, back up your data before performing the operation.
    • If the Services have been suspended message is displayed in the lower right corner of the computer, it is not recommended that you click Fix now.

Exit the clean boot

  1. On the taskbar, click the search box, enter "system configuration", and select Run as administrator.
  2. On the General tab, select Normal startup.

  3. Go to Apply > OK, and restart the computer to enter the normal startup mode.

Determine the cause after performing a clean boot

If no problem occurs when the computer is in Clean boot mode, enable or disable certain drivers, and restart the computer to determine the faulty startup app or service. Although opening one service or startup item at a time and restarting the computer eventually finds any faulty service or app, the most efficient method is to test half of the services or startup items each time you restart the computer. This method excludes half of the services or startup items as potential causes of the issue. Then, repeat the process until the cause is identified. Perform the following:

  1. Log in to the computer as an administrator.
  2. Choose Search and enter "msconfig". Select System Configuration from the result list.
  3. Select the Services tab, and then select Hide all Microsoft services.
  4. Select every checkbox in the upper half of the service list.
  5. Click OK, and then click Restart.
  6. After the computer is restarted, check whether the issue persists.
    1. If the problem still occurs, then one of the checked items is the problematic service. Repeat steps 1 through 6, but in step 4, clear the checkboxes in the lower half of the service list that were selected in the last test.
    2. If the problem does not occur, then the checked items are not causing the problem. Repeat steps 1 through 6, but in step 4, deselect the checked items in the Services list of the last test.
    3. Repeat these steps until you identify the cause of the issue, or until you determine that no service is the cause of the issue. If the issue occurs when you select only one service in the service list, go to step 9. If no service is the cause of the issue, go to step 7.
  7. Choose Startup and then choose Open Task Manager. On the Startup tab in Task Manager, one at a time, select the upper half of the previously disabled items (i.e., using a binary search approach: for example, if there are 10 apps, enable the top 5 previously disabled ones first and try), and then select Enable. (For Windows 11: On the Startup apps tab in Task Manager, right-click and select the corresponding startup item or service to verify them one by one.)
  8. Click OK, and then click Restart.
    1. If the problem occurs, repeat step 7, but this time disable the lower half of the items that were enabled in the last test.
    2. If the problem does not occur, repeat step 7, but disable everything that was enabled in the last test and enable the other half of the items that were previously disabled.
    3. If you still encounter the problem after enabling only one startup item, that enabled item is the cause of the issue, and you should proceed to step 9.
  9. Once you have identified the startup item or service causing the issue, contact the program manufacturer to determine if the issue can be resolved, or run Windows with the service unchecked or the startup item disabled.
