Unable to locate or record routes for outdoor workouts using my HUAWEI band

The HUAWEI Band 3 Pro and HUAWEI Band 4 Pro support independent global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning. Specifically, these devices can independently record your workout routes during outdoor workouts without needing your phone. If you encounter positioning issues, refer to GPS positioning fails or is slow or the outdoor workout routes are inaccurate on my HUAWEI watch/band.

The hardware of HUAWEI bands does not support independent GNSS. As such, it is normal that workout routes cannot be recorded when your band is used alone for outdoor workouts. HUAWEI bands rely on your phone to assist with GNSS positioning and work in conjunction with the Huawei Health app to track your workout routes.

If your band is paired with a HUAWEI phone or iPhone

It is recommended that the location permission for the Huawei Health app be set to "always allowed." For iPhones, we recommend that you open the HUAWEI Health app and keep it running in the foreground during workouts to prevent the app from being cleared due to system controls.

The following demonstrates how to set the location permission using a HUAWEI phone as an example:

  • For phones running HarmonyOS 5.0 or later, set the location permission by going to Settings > Privacy & security > Location > Huawei Health and selecting Always allowed.
  • For phones running HarmonyOS 4.X or earlier, set the location permission by going to Settings > Apps & Services > Permission > Huawei Health and selecting Always allowed.

Method 1: Starting an outdoor workout via the Huawei Health app.

  1. Connect your band to your phone via the Huawei Health app. Open the app, wait until the location icon on the app screen changes from to , indicating successful location tracking. Then, start a workout.
  2. Keep your phone with you during the workout and ensure your band remains connected to the Huawei Health app.
  3. Once your workout is complete, the data will sync to the Huawei Health app. To view your workout route, go to the home screen of the Huawei Health app and tap workout records.

Method 2: Starting an outdoor workout directly on your band.

  1. If you prefer to start an outdoor workout directly on your band, wait until the band has successfully located your position before starting the workout (as shown in the following figure). Starting an outdoor workout with an unstable GPS signal may result in an inaccurate route or incorrect distance calculation. During the workout, carry your phone with you and make sure your band is connected to the Huawei Health app on your phone.

  2. Once your workout is complete, the data will sync to the Huawei Health app. To view your workout route, go to the home screen of the Huawei Health app and tap workout records.

If your band is paired with a third-party Android phone

  • If your band is paired with a third-party Android phone, it cannot access GNSS signals from your phone via the Huawei Health app for positioning, and thus cannot generate outdoor workout routes.
  • We recommend starting your workout through the Huawei Health app, monitoring your workout heart rate with your band, and using your phone's GNSS to track your workout route.
