My HUAWEI computer freezes or runs slowly when running large programs or games or running multiple programs

Problem

When the computer runs large programs, games, or multiple apps at the same time, the system freezes and runs slowly. Moreover, the device may heat up or generate loud fan noise.

Cause

  • Insufficient hardware resources: Generally, large programs or games require high hardware configurations. If the processor, memory, or graphics card of the computer does not meet the software configuration requirements, frame freezing or frame loss may occur.
  • Software issues: Outdated or incompatible drivers, system performance settings, or low game settings cannot meet the current performance requirements.
  • Background programs: Some programs running in the background occupy a large number of system resources. If the computer is infected with viruses or malware, the system performance may deteriorate and the computer may run slowly.
  • Heat dissipation issues: When the computer runs large programs or games, the hardware generates a large amount of heat. If the heat dissipation is poor, the CPU frequency will be limited or reduced.

Solution

It is recommended that you log in to the official website of the software to check whether it is compatible with Windows 10/11 and whether your computer configuration meets the minimum configuration requirements of the software. If your computer meets the configuration requirements, you can optimize the settings as follows:

  1. Improve the heat dissipation conditions: Do not place the laptop on a soft surface (such as a quilt, bed, or legs). It is recommended that the laptop be placed in a well-ventilated environment with a heat dissipation bracket for better heat dissipation.

Suggestions: The laptop uses silicone grease for heat dissipation. It is recommended that you go to a Huawei Customer Service Center to have silicone grease re-dispensed to the heat spreader inside the device body every year, and have your device cleaned and maintained (including fan/air inlets and outlets cleaning) every half year. The heat dissipation silicone grease dispensing is performed together with other repair and cleaning operations. The main repair and cleaning operations are charged. Actual charging is subject to the detection and processing provided by the store engineers.

  2. When running large programs, games, or multiple apps at the same time, close and exit unnecessary background apps, unused high CPU usage processes, and abnormal app processes, and uninstall third-party antivirus, manager, or bundled software. The procedure is as follows:
    1. Find the app icon on the taskbar in the lower right corner of the desktop, right-click the app icon, and select Exit from the shortcut menu.

    2. Right-click the blank area on the taskbar or the Start menu, select Task Manager, select the apps that occupy a large amount of memory and disk space in Processes (click Details first if you are using Windows 11), and click End task.

    3. Right-click the Windows logo, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, and uninstall third-party antivirus, manager, or bundled software, cracked versions, or pirated software (such as LDS Benchmark, 360 Manager, and Tencent Manager).
  1. Use Huawei PC Manager to optimize the startup items and check and update the drivers to the latest versions, to improve the computer performance. The procedure is as follows:
    1. Open Huawei PC Manager, go to Optimization > Startup manager, click OPTIMIZE, and disable auto-startup items and services.

    b. On the Huawei PC Manager screen, go to Optimization > Drivers, click Check for updates/UPDATE, and update the drivers to the latest version to improve the overall system stability.

  2. Enable the Best performance mode for the computer:

This mode improves the overall performance, but also increases the computer's power consumption. It provides smoother running, while causing more heat.

    1. Go to Windows Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, and change the default Balance mode to Best performance.

    2. Return to the desktop, right-click This PC, and go to Properties > System > System information. Under Device specifications, click Advanced system settings. Click Settings under Performance. Under Visual Effects, select Adjust for best performance, and select Smooth edges of screen fonts. Custom will be automatically selected, and click OK.

    3. Press and hold Win + R and enter "msconfig". Under System configuration, go to Boot > Advanced options. Under Boot advanced options, select Number of processors and set it to the largest number, and click OK.

    4. After the settings are complete, restart the computer. For HUAWEI MateBook X/S/D/E/Performance series models, after the computer restarts, connect it to a power adapter. When the battery level is greater than 20%, press and hold Fn+P or go to Huawei PC Manager > Optimizer > Performance tuning and enable Performance mode.

  3. For computers with dual graphics cards (integrated graphics card + discrete graphics card), set the discrete graphics card to be preferentially used by referring to How to set a HUAWEI computer to preferentially invoke the NVIDIA discrete graphics card and perform the following steps to optimize graphics card settings:
    1. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Global Settings > Vertical synchronization > Off.

    2. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Program settings > Select a program to customize > Add, select your gaming software, and go to Select the preferred graphics processor for this program > High-performance NVIDIA processor.

    3. For AMD devices, go to the Start menu, find AMD Radeon Settings, and go to AMD Graphics Control Panel > Games > Global Settings > Global graphics > Wait for vertical refresh > Off.

  4. Optimize the software settings to ensure better compatibility with other Windows systems. You can also adjust the software settings to reduce the image quality or special effects, which will reduce the payload of the computer. To optimize the software compatibility settings, perform the following steps:
    1. Right-click the desk shortcut of the application or the operational file in its installation directory and then choose Properties.
    2. Switch to the Compatibility tab.
    3. Under Compatibility mode, select Run this program in compatibility mode for, and select the system version (such as Windows 7 or 8) required by the software from the drop-down list. After the setting is complete, go to Apply > OK.

  5. Most integrated graphics devices are designed to be lightweight and thin. Compared with devices with discrete graphics cards, integrated graphics devices have lower system performance. If you run large apps or open multiple apps for chatting, web browsing, video playback, and office work at the same time, the performance may be insufficient. In this case, you can upgrade the hardware, for example, by connecting to or using a discrete graphics card with good compatibility.

If the issue remains unresolved

If the issue persists, back up your data in advance, record your Office account, and use F10 to restore your computer to its factory settings.
