Why do I see flickering or ripples in slow motion videos taken under luminous lighting?

Problem:

Flickering or ripples appear in slow motion videos taken under luminous lighting.

Cause:

AC-powered luminous lights constantly flash at a certain frequency. The frequency of each video frame is far higher than the frequency of such lights. As a result, some frames of the videos are shot when the light is on while others are shot when the light is off. This is what causes flickering or ripples to appear in videos.

Solution:

This issue will not occur when you shoot slow motion videos in natural light.
