Using a USB flash drive to install Windows 10

1. Prepare the following tools

  1. A USB flash drive with a capacity of no less than 8 GB. Back up any data that is already on the USB drive, as it will be erased when you format the USB. Format the USB drive using the FAT32 format.

To do this, right-click on your USB flash drive and select Format. Select FAT32 under File system.

  2. A computer that can connect to a USB flash drive and access the Internet (to download the system installation disk).
  3. The computer needs to be reconnected to a network after installing the new operating system. After installation, the drivers aren't installed which will result in the power button, volume buttons, fingerprint scanner, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth not working. Download PC Manager before reinstalling so that you can install the drivers after the new system is installed.

2. Prepare system installation drive

  1. Connect the USB flash drive to the computer and visit the official Microsoft website (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10).

Click Download and then Save. Download the media creation tool for installing the system: MediaCreationTool.exe.

  2. After the tool is installed, click Run, or go to the installation path and find MediaCreationTool.exe. Double-click the package to run it.
  3. Click Accept.

  4. Select Create for the other computer under What do you want to perform. Click Next.

  5. Uncheck Use the recommended option for this computer and set Language to English (United States), Version to Windows 10, and Integer to 64-bit (X64). Click Next.

  6. Check USB flash drive under Select required medium and select Next.

  7. If the USB flash drive is displayed in the Select the USB disk window, it means that you have successfully connected the USB flash drive to the computer. Click Next.

If a message pops up indicating that the USB flash drive cannot be found, it means that the USB flash drive cannot be detected. Check that the USB flash drive is connected to the computer correctly and click Refresh the driver list.

  8. Your computer will download Windows 10 automatically. When the download is complete, a message will pop-up reading Creating medium for Windows 10.

  9. Then a message will pop up reading Your USB drive is ready. Click Finish. You can now install the new system using the USB flash drive.

3. Install Windows 10

Back up files to an external device before installation to avoid losing any important files.

  1. Connect the USB flash drive to your computer. Press F12 during startup, select the USB flash drive, select Startup using USB drive, and press Enter.

  2. Select your preferences under Language, Time and currency format, and Keyboard and input method, and then click Next.

  3. After the installation screen is displayed, click Install now.

  4. Check I accept the conditions in the Applicable statement and licence window and click Next.

  5. Select Custom: Install Windows only (Advanced) as the installation type.

  6. In the pop-up dialog box reading Where do you want to install Windows?, select Drive 0, Partition 3: Windows. Go to Next > Confirm.

If the disk partition has been completely deleted, select the disk and click New to create a primary partition. Click Format, select NTFS as the file type, and perform subsequent operations as prompted.

  7. A message will be displayed indicating that Windows is being installed.

  8. After the system is installed, the computer will restart automatically. Disconnect the USB flash drive from the computer.

  9. A window reading Select operating system will be displayed during the restart process. Wait for about two seconds for the system to automatically choose this setting.

  10. The first-time startup screen will be displayed indicating that the system has been reinstalled. Follow the instructions to finish setting up the system.

4. Connect your computer to the Internet, download PC Manager, and install all corresponding drives

  1. Many functions cannot be used after a reinstallation of the system. Connect your computer to the Internet, visit the official Huawei or Honor website, and download PC Manager.

    • If you are using a Huawei computer, visit the official Huawei website (http://consumer.huawei.com/en/support/index.htm), enter your product name, and select your product under Related Products. Click SUPPORT and then Software Download. Click PC Manager and then the download icon. When the download is complete, open and install the package.
    • If you are using an Honor computer, visit the official Honor website, enter your product name, and select your product under Related Products. Click SUPPORT and then Software Download. Click PC Manager and then the download icon. When the download is complete, open and install the package.
  2. Open PC Manager, go to Manage drivers, and select Check. Corresponding drivers will be installed and/or updated on your computer automatically.
  3. Restart your computer and check that all drivers are installed properly in Device Manager and PC Manager.
