Making a Real Difference

Detection of visual disorders in childhood requires a specialised paediatric ophthalmologist, and even then - it is very complex to examine children at a very young age
We aim to develop an easy-to-use, portable, and affordable device for non-trained professionals to identify these children with visual disorders as soon as possible, ideally when they are only babies. The aim of the Track.Ai project is to achieve a world without visually impaired children.

After decades of research and development, we have finally reached a new age of AI technology. Researchers in AI now exploring fields such as natural language processing, pattern recognition, image recognition, data mining, machine learning, intelligent interface and intelligent information processing. Some industry opinions maintain that in ten to fifteen years, AI will catch up with the average level of human intelligence.
At present, with the rapid development of information technology, Huawei believes that the application of AI on smartphones can already be considered a milestone and breakthrough. It is estimated that in two or three years, AI ecosystem will take share shape and practical AI applications will become pervasive.

Story Sign

There are approximately 32 million deaf children globally and many struggle to learn to read, often due to a lack of resources bridging sign language and reading. We believe that technology can help to open the world of books to deaf children and their families.
This is why we developed StorySign, a free app powered by Huawei AI that reads selected children's books and translates them into sign language. We wanted to create an authentic reading experience and make it possible for families with deaf children to enjoy an enriched story time.

Unfinished
Symphony

Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor is regarded as the ultimate ‘Unfinished Symphony’. Music experts debate to this day as to why Schubert never completed it, with factors such as ill health and distraction being given as the most likely reasons. What has never been in doubt though, was that his eighth symphony was unlike anything Schubert had written before.
By completing one of the most iconic unfinished symphonies of all times, Huawei has set out to honour Schubert’s legacy, as well as taking inspiration from his pioneering spirit, by using the power of AI to finish the Symphony No. 8 in the same style that Schubert started it.

Using the power of AI, Huawei has taught its HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro smartphone to compose the third and fourth movements of Schubert’s famously ‘Unfinished Symphony’. This was achieved by harnessing the power and intelligence of the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, utilising its in-built advanced technology which has been specifically designed to complete AI-based tasks.
The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro smartphone listened to the first two movements of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, analysed the key musical elements that make it so incredible, then generated the melody for the missing third and fourth movement from its analysis.

Facing Emotions

Huawei, partnered with the Polish Blind Association, developed an app called Facing Emotions that uses artificial intelligence to allow the visually impaired to "see" the emotion on the face of someone they are talking to by translating it into sound.
We use the rear camera of Huawei's HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro phone to read the emotion on the face of whoever the blind user is talking to, by analysing their expression using artificial intelligence (AI).
An offline machine-learning algorithm integrated into the phone identifies the main facial features of the interlocutor, including eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. It can then determine the positions in relation to each other and identify the particular emotion.

The Frequency of Love

Conceived in Italy, and developed through the support of WWF ITALY, Huawei takes AI to a next level, enabling humanity to get closer to the animal world thanks to our amazing technology.
We trained our Processor, KIRIN 980, to learn to recognize the sound of Humback whales, and transforming them into musical notes, thus literally translating these “far away sounds” into a beautiful form of art, MUSIC, that we can share to human audience in a larger scale.

Sound of Light

By introducing AI to music, Huawei redefines what’s possible with music composition. We’ve embedded the colour information of aurora into HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro’s AI system, and by breaking down the information by colour, size, shape and speed, the system was able to generate the elements that were needed for music composition.
After transforming light into sounds, Huawei invited musicians to bring the piece to life in an orchestra setting. The combination of AI and professional musicians gave birth to the fascinating melody known as Sound of Light.
