I forget the startup password of my HUAWEI computer

Problem

The user forgets the startup password of a HUAWEI computer and cannot access the system.

Solution

Confirm the password

  1. Recall whether the password has been changed: Confirm whether you or someone else has changed the password.
  2. Check case and special characters: Pay attention to the case and special characters such as underscores (_) when entering the password. Click the eye icon in the password box to check the entered content. Try common passwords (such as anniversaries and the last few digits of your phone number).

Switch to other login options

If your HUAWEI laptop has a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint unlock feature enabled, and the unlock method works properly, you can try to log in to the system using any of these methods.

5 unlock methods are available on Windows.

Retrieve the password

Local account login

  1. Click Login options, click the key icon, and enter the password. If the password is incorrect, click Reset password according to the onscreen instructions, and answer the security questions as prompted.
  2. Change the password using commands: If you cannot answer the security questions, you can change the password using commands.

If no security question is set, a message will be displayed after you click Reset password, indicating that no drive is available and removable media is required for this feature. In this case, perform the following.

    1. Restart the computer. During startup, press F8 repeatedly. On the displayed Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot. On the displayed Advanced options screen, select CMD.

If the system still asks you to enter the password after you enter the command prompt, the current system version may not be Windows 11 Home (Chinese). In this case, you are advised to Use F10 to restore a HUAWEI Windows computer to its factory settings. If the issue persists, reinstall the system by referring to Using a USB flash drive as installation media for Windows on a Windows 10 computer.

    2. In the command prompt window, enter the following commands. (Press Enter after each command is entered. The letters are case insensitive. You can press Tab to auto-complete commands.)

      C:

      cd Windows

      cd System32

      ren Utilman.exe Utilman.exe.bak

      copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe

    3. Close the command prompt window, restart the computer, and open the login screen. Click the person icon in the lower right corner to open the command prompt window, and enter "net user" to query all local accounts.

    4. Enter the "net user + local account name + new password" command, for example, "net user L3 321" (reset the password of the local account L3 to "321"), and press Enter.

Note: If the account name contains spaces, use the English quotation marks and enter the account name again, for example, "net user "zhang san" 321".

    5. Close the command prompt window, return to the login screen, and enter the new password to log in.

To restore the auxiliary feature (person icon), search for "CMD" in the Start menu, right-click the search result, and choose Run as administrator from the shortcut menu. Then, enter "sfc /scannow" in the command prompt window and press Enter.

Microsoft account login (with an option to help you if you have forgotten your PIN)

  1. If you are connected to the Internet and I forgot my PIN/Set up my PIN is displayed, click this option. If this option is not displayed, try entering your PIN two to three times.

  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to access the Microsoft mailbox and enter the verification code to reset the PIN.

If the verification screen is not displayed, try connecting to another network or connecting to your phone's hotspot.

Connect your device to the Internet: On the screen for entering the password, click the earth icon () in the lower right corner and enter the Wi-Fi password to connect to the network. If the network cannot be connected, change the network environment or use USB tethering on your phone.

Share your network via USB on your phone:

    1. Use a USB data cable to connect a phone (Android or HarmonyOS) to your computer.
    2. On your phone, go to Settings > Mobile network > Personal hotspot > More sharing settings, enable USB tethering, wait until the network icon in the lower right corner of the computer changes to the computer icon, and check whether the computer can access the Internet.

Reset the password using the security key USB flash drive

If a message is displayed, asking you to insert a USB flash drive to reset the password, you can insert a secure key USB flash drive to do so. For details, see Creating a password reset disk for the Windows computer. If you do not have such a drive, you cannot log in to the system using a local account and its password. Take another way to log in.
