Music playback in Audacity is not smooth and noises are audible

Problem

When the audio host is set to MME or Windows DirectSound, music can be played properly. However, noises are audible when the audio host is set to Windows WASAPI.

Cause

This issue occurs when the audio host is set to Windows WASAPI in Audacity. In this mode, the noises generated during the audio playback are within the range allowed by the app.

Solution

Before you use Audacity, set the audio host to MME or Windows DirectSound.

To do this, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Edit > Preferences.

  2. In the dialog box that is displayed, select Devices and set the mode in the Host drop-down list box to MME or Windows DirectSound.
