PIN and PUK codes are carrier services.
What is a SIM PIN?
Identity code of a SIM card is a security measure used to protect the SIM card.
After PIN protection is enabled, you need to enter the PIN each time you restart your phone/tablet or insert the SIM card again. This prevents others from using your SIM card.
What is a PUK?
PUK is short for PIN unlock key.
If you have entered an incorrect PIN three times consecutively, your SIM card will be automatically locked and you will need to enter the PUK to unlock it. After entering the PUK, you can unlock and reset the PIN.
If you have entered an incorrect PUK 10 times consecutively, your SIM card will be permanently locked and cannot be used again. Exercise caution when entering the PUK.
How do I obtain the initial PIN and PUK of my SIM card?
The initial PIN and PUK are provided by the carrier. When you apply for a SIM card, the related information is usually provided with the SIM card. If your full-sized SIM card is not with you, call the hotline of the carrier that issued your SIM card.
The initial PIN of China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom SIM cards is usually 1234. If an error message is displayed after you enter the initial PIN, call the hotline of the carrier that issued your SIM card.
Note: The initial PIN is simple. You are advised to change the initial PIN after obtaining it. (Go to Settings on your phone/tablet, search for and tap SIM PIN, and change the PIN.)
What should I do if I have forgotten my PIN?
If you have forgotten your PIN, contact your carrier to obtain the PUK, enter an incorrect PIN three times, and then enter the PUK to reset your PIN.
If the issue persists, take your identity document to the carrier's customer service center.
