The laptop does not automatically switch from the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi when it is close to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi after it is connected to a dual-band router

Problem

The laptop does not automatically switch from the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi when it is close to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi after it is connected to a dual-band router.

Cause

The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal is strong at a short distance. The default Preferred band of the wireless network adapter is set as No Preference (as shown in the following figure). The connected Wi-Fi does not meet the conditions for switching to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Solution

This problem does not affect your normal use. You can perform the following steps to switch to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network:

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the Wi-Fi network.
  2. Right-click the Windows icon in the lower left corner, open Device Manager, select Network adapters, right-click Intel (R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz, and choose Advanced. Find Preferred Band and select Prefer 5GHz band.
