Issues of the sleep apnea feature on HUAWEI watches/bands
| Issues of the sleep apnea feature on HUAWEI watches/bands |
Sleep apnea is characterized by the total or partial obstruction of the airway during sleep. It may present itself as snoring, and can cause a drop in blood oxygen, wake you up repeatedly during the night, and affect your sleep architecture, making you feel drowsy during the day and causing memory issues. In extreme cases, sleep apnea could affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and cognitive abilities. Sleep apnea tests use metrics like heart rate and SpO2, instead of snoring sounds.
The test results on your HUAWEI watch/band are only for you to understand your sleep health status. They should not be used for medical diagnosis or other medical purposes.
Conditions for displaying sleep apnea results:
- Wear your watch/band to bed and sleep for more than 5 hours (Trusleep data).
- Your heart rate during sleep stays above 45 beats/minute.
- Your SpO2 results are displayed normally.
FAQ 1: No sleep apnea results are displayed

- Make sure that you are wearing your watch/band properly. Improper wearing will lead to inaccurate measurements or even failure to measure your health data, such as heart rate, SpO2, and sleep.

- Wear your watch/band to bed and sleep for more than 5 hours. If, during this period, your heart rate stays above 45 beats/minute and SpO2 results are displayed normally, sleep apnea results will be displayed.
- Update your watch/band to the latest version and try again.
FAQ 2: Sleep apnea occasionally reports false positives
- Wearing the device too loose or too tight can affect signal quality and may lead to occasional abnormal detections. The correct tightness is when, after wearing it, the gap between the watch strap connection structure and your wrist can fit half to one little finger. The device should be worn as shown in the following picture, with at least one finger's distance from the wrist bone. After putting it on, the device should not easily slide up or down on your arm and should not cover any jewelry or other objects.

- Consuming alcohol or other psychoactive drugs, excessive fatigue, physical discomfort (such as a cold that causes airway congestion), and tossing and turning during sleep can lead to occasional abnormal detections.
FAQ 3: Sleep apnea results show Mild, Moderate, and Severe, but I personally feel fine
- If this is the first time it has occurred, check for any occasional false positives related to sleep apnea, and continue wearing the device to monitor your sleep.
- If the results show Moderate or Severe more than 80% of the time over a two-week period, and this occurs more than five times, you may have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. It is recommended that you visit a hospital for further examination. The results from the hospital shall prevail. You can go to departments such as Pulmonology, Otolaryngology, Sleep Center, or Neurology. Search for "sleep apnea" to find the appropriate department and specialist at your chosen hospital.
- If it's just a rare occurrence, you can rest assured. Just try to sleep on your side and make sure you wear the device correctly.
FAQ 4: I snore during sleep, but the sleep apnea test shows no abnormalities
- This feature is designed to monitor obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, not snoring. If you want to monitor snoring at night, you're advised to use the Sleep sound recording feature in the Huawei Health app under Sleep. To enable this feature:
- Android/EMUI phones: Go to Huawei Health > Health > Sleep, tap
in the upper right corner and then Sleep settings > Sleep sounds, and toggle on Sleep sound recording. - iPhones: Go to HUAWEI Health > Health > Sleep tracking, tap then settings icon in the upper right corner and then Sleep sounds, and toggle on Sleep sound recording.
- Android/EMUI phones: Go to Huawei Health > Health > Sleep, tap
- Snoring can be caused by various factors, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, but not everyone who snores has the syndrome. Snoring can also be related to issues like a narrow airway or obesity. It's normal to show no abnormalities if you snore but don't have sleep apnea. If you have concerns, you're advised to undergo professional sleep monitoring and relevant tests to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
