Alleviate HUAWEI phone/tablet lag

Free up storage on your device

If the available memory is less than 20% of the total memory, the performance of your phone/tablet might degrade.

  1. If too many apps are running in the background, the running memory will be insufficient, causing app lag. It is recommended that you clear background apps regularly and power off and restart the device every two to three days.
  2. Insufficient memory can also cause the system to run slowly. Open Phone Manager/Tablet Manager, tap Cleanup, and delete unnecessary files as prompted to ensure sufficient storage space. (It is recommended that you reserve more than 20% of the storage space.)
  3. Too many apps will occupy a large amount of memory. It is recommended that you uninstall apps that are not frequently used to free up more space. You can touch and hold the icon of each unwanted app and select Uninstall.

Disable Power Saving mode and ensure that the battery level is above 20%.

If Power Saving mode is on or the battery level is too low, the device will turn off features to prolong your battery life. If you have enabled Power Saving mode, it is recommended that you go to Settings > Battery, disable Power Saving mode, and make sure that the battery level is above 20%.

Disable Magnification and Ignore repeated touches.

  • Magnification can help visually impaired people use their phones. It is normal that there is a slight delay when you tap the screen. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility > Magnification, and disable Magnification.
  • After Ignore repeated touches is enabled, multiple taps within a specified time interval will be considered as a single tap. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility > Touchscreen settings > Ignore repeated touches, and disable Ignore repeated touches.

Check whether the device is overheated

Your device features an overheating protection mechanism that prevents it from getting too hot by reducing system performance. It is recommended that you avoid using the device during charging, lower the screen brightness, and disable unused apps and features (such as Bluetooth and NFC) that consume excessive power. After the device cools down, check whether the stuttering issue is resolved.

Check whether the device temperature is too low

If the device temperature is too low, the system performance deteriorates due to insufficient battery activity. Try not to use the device when the device temperature is too low. Wait until the temperature rises and check whether freezing or lag is relieved.

Adjust the screen refresh rate to High

When the refresh rate is set to Smart or Standard, the frame rate will be limited in some scenarios, causing frame freezing. Go to Settings > Display & brightness > Screen refresh rate and set Screen refresh rate to High.

For certain products, Screen resolution will display. You can search for Screen resolution to set the item.

If Screen refresh rate/Screen resolution is unavailable on your phone, skip this step.

Update the system version to the latest

The new system version will improve system performance. Please update your device to the latest version.

System update-related freezing/lag occurs because the system optimizes apps after an update. Optimization lasts up to a week. To reduce the chance of freezing or lag following a system update, it is recommended, following an update, to charge the device with the screen off for at least 2 hours. Check whether freezing or lag disappears after one week.

Check your third-party apps

  1. Uninstall any third-party management apps installed on your device, as they tend to conflict with Phone Manager/Tablet Manager provided by your device.
  2. If your device freezes when using a third-party app, contact the app or call Huawei hotline.

Clean up the memory card

Other scenarios

  1. Update the system

Make sure that the system and apps are all updated to their latest versions. New versions will optimize the device performance.

To update the system, go to Settings > Software update > Check for updates, or go to Update in the My HUAWEI app.

  2. Restore to factory settings

Back up your data, and restore your phone/tablet to its factory settings.
