Health metrics are an important indicator of a healthy life, especially for someone whose lifestyle revolves around sports and performance.

Being able to instantly monitor parameters such as oxygen saturation (SpO2) in daily life is a unique opportunity to follow cardiovascular health.

Having enough oxygen in our body is extremely important for the healthy functioning of our brain, heart and other organs. Insufficient oxygen levels can lead to various health problems and can even be life-threatening. Therefore, measurements such as SpO2 are an indispensable parameter for those who want to monitor their health status in daily life . [1] This parameter has special importance for athletes. Athletes or athletes who cannot maintain the desired oxygen levels may experience limitations in their athletic performance. [2].

In this article, I explain how I use the features of HUAWEI WATCH 5 and the benefits it provides me. My aim is to take measures based on scientific data to improve my performance with my smartwatch and share my experience.

I am the captain of Beşiktaş (BJK) and Türkiye Women's National Football Teams. I work as a physical education teacher and football player. My football life started at a young age on the streets of Ankara. I started playing football when there was no women's football team in Turkey. Football became my life. I have been pursuing this passion with the same enthusiasm and love for 21 years. I aim to open a path of hope for disadvantaged girls by using sports as a tool.

My Football Journey

My football life It started on the streets at a very young age. At the age of 11, I joined an academy to pursue football professionally. Football has become my way of life. I have been playing for one of the most well-known teams in Turkey for the last 10 years. I have worn our national jersey 121 times to date. [3]

When I started playing, women's football was not very well known either locally or internationally. There were no smartphones, matches were not televised and there were limited opportunities for promotion. It was a difficult time for girls like me, no family was encouraging their daughters to play football, even as a hobby.

Today, women's football exists in Turkey, its recognition has increased and it is developing. My friends and I are pioneers of women's football and we are trying to overcome the difficulties of being a woman by using sports as a tool. In 2019, I became much more visible when I was included in an important sponsorship program that included 14 female football players in the world. My sponsor's initiatives are priceless. I believe that my story has reached a wider audience and inspired and encouraged many women. I know that it is my responsibility to be successful in every field; for these reasons, I strive to achieve the best results and be a positive role model.

The Multi-Aspects of Education in My Life as a Football Player

a) Team Trainings at My Football Club

The training sessions with my team consist of tactical and physical exercises aimed at improving team play and collective performance. During these intense training sessions that we do 5 days a week, HUAWEI WATCH 5 has many advanced features to track my performance. It is quite impressive that these features can be adapted to different sports. Of course, I adapted them to football. For example, increasing speed in flat running workouts is closely related to SpO2 levels. Tracking my data in real-life conditions is very helpful in analyzing my current situation.

b) National Team Trainings:

It allows me to track my individual performance during the high-intensity training sessions we do at national team camps. During intensive training sessions such as Rondos and Small-Sided Games (SSGs), sprint and speed endurance drills, and especially HIIT-based interval runs, I can instantly track my heart rate, SpO2 level and recovery time. This is also very valuable for my trainer to guide me correctly. In addition, by constantly monitoring many parameters from my sleep quality to my stress levels, it provides a holistic picture of my overall health, allowing me to better understand my own limits and areas for development. Thanks to this information, I can perform more consistently, consistently and at a higher level during the professional and controlled camp periods.

I can view the GPS data recorded during my workouts on the map in the HUAWEI Health App; I can see my runs from one wing to another, the speed values I reached during the run, the points where I accelerated and decelerated, my turns and sprints. I can determine the total distance and the intensity areas on the field (for example, which area I ran the most). In general, the HUAWEI WATCH 5 offers sufficient features to monitor my performance on the field.

c) Individual Training

HUAWEI WATCH 5 acts as my personal trainer for individual workouts at the gym. From weight training to HIIT exercises, I can track detailed data such as my heart rate, SpO2 level, and calories burned. Especially in strength training, information such as rest time between sets and decrease in pulse rate play an important role in assessing my fitness level.

After training, I pay extra attention to my stress levels and sleep score using the watch, which plays an important role in keeping our body and mind healthy. HUAWEI WATCH 5 can analyze stress levels using heart rate variability (HRV) data. In this way, I can better analyze the relationship between my sleep patterns and stress levels and take precautions, because I know that insufficient rest increases stress. [4] When the watch tells me that I have had enough rest and my stress levels are low, I know that I have the energy I need for high performance.

On my own time, I also like to take an ECG with the watch to detect possible cardiovascular risks. This watch allows me to effectively monitor my heart health during training and makes me feel confident.

“Being able to instantly track my heart rate, SpO2 level and recovery time, especially during intense workouts such as interval runs, significantly increases my workout quality.”

Key Tools and Metrics for Sustainable Performance Improvement

HUAWEI WATCH 5 can measure basic health indicators in a short time. I can track this data on both my watch and my phone at the same time and generate health reports. Patterns in basic measurements can indicate changes in our health and fitness, which makes HUAWEI WATCH 5 data very valuable.

a) Heart rate (Pulse): Heart rate monitoring improves my training quality, reduces my risk of injury and helps me perform better in matches. For example; a high resting heart rate measured after training or in the morning may still indicate that I am tired. In this case, I rest or do only light exercise instead of heavy training, thus reducing my risk of injury. I found the high heart rate warning during training very valuable.

SpO2 measurement

b) Real-time SpO2 measurement : Understanding our blood oxygen levels is an important indicator of a healthy life. I simply touch the HUAWEI X-TAP sensor and measure my blood oxygen levels within seconds. HUAWEI WATCH 5 notifies me as soon as abnormal SpO2 readings occur. Knowing my SpO2 values instantly gives me a better understanding of my health status. I have not measured any abnormal data so far, but if I see abnormal results, this information will allow me to seek professional medical advice early on about possible risks such as fatigue, respiratory problems and possible injuries, which is invaluable for improving my physical performance.

c) Monitoring skin temperature: Keeping body temperature under control is important to prevent overheating, fatigue and dehydration, to optimize individual training and to reduce my risk of injury. For example; I measured high skin temperature during individual training before an important match. It could be a sign of overexertion or inadequate recovery. The watch was silently telling me to stop training and rest.

d) Activity rings: One of the distinguishing features of HUAWEI smartwatches is that they track your daily physical activity with three key measurements: the move ring that measures calories burned, the exercise ring that tracks our exercise times, and the stand ring that protects against the risks of a sedentary lifestyle by measuring the time you spend standing or moving for more than a minute. I can see these three features at the same time.

HUAWEI WATCH 5

“Thanks to the HUAWEI WATCH 5, I can more consciously adjust my recovery time after training, my sleep quality, and the intensity of the training I plan for the next day. This reduces my risk of injury.”

Conclusion

HUAWEI WATCH 5 is very easy to use. Its touch screen is impressive. It has a reassuring and stylish appearance. Its battery life of up to 11 days in battery saver mode and fast wireless charging feature allow me to use it without interruption. It is always on my arm. I can easily answer calls from my wrist by connecting it to my phone via Bluetooth. I do not need to carry my phone during training.

My football journey has accelerated with HUAWEI WATCH 5. I feel like I have moved forward in time and made a leap with this watch. Being able to control my health and share my health data with my doctor, dietician and coach gives me confidence. I can perform at my best in the safest way on the field.
