Virtual Power: The Big Novelty for Cyclists
The main attraction of the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro for those of us who ride bikes is, without doubt, the virtual power function. Until now, if you wanted to train with watts, the only option was to install a physical power meter on your bike. That means a significant investment, and one you would have to repeat for each bike if you own more than one.
“HUAWEI’s WATCH GT 6 Pro is the ideal watch to start training with power data without a big investment.”
HUAWEI has managed to bring that concept to the wrist. The watch calculates power based on speed, gradient and other parameters such as bike type and weight. While it may not be the same as a high-end crank or pedal power meter, the reality is that, especially on the road, the data it provides is consistent and surprisingly reliable. If you’re just starting out with power-based training, the information it provides helps you differentiate between your personal sensations while pedaling, which can vary significantly, and your actual performance. For instance, you might feel tired and believe you’re not performing well, but the power data objectively allows you to determine whether that feeling of fatigue is merely a sensation or if your performance is indeed within your usual range. I see it as a gateway into power-based training. If you’ve never trained with watts, this feature lets you discover how your effort varies on climbs, flats or sprints, and start organizing your sessions by power zones.

In this relaxed example, the Virtual Power (W) curve showed a baseline around 150–230 W with frequent short surges above 300 W, and a late peak reaching ~427 W. The dense pattern of spikes reveals micro-intervals and recovery phases; by switching between the Heart rate / Speed / Elevation tabs, you can correlate those bursts with changes in pulse, pace, or gradient. Even in MTB, where conditions are constantly changing, the estimate is still a useful reference to understand effort intensity.
“HUAWEI has managed to bring the concept of virtual power to the wrist. The HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro calculates power based on speed, gradient and other parameters such as bike type and weight.”
If you decide to move on to a real power meter, the watch can also connect to it and calculate metrics like FTP. FTP stands for the maximum average power a cyclist can sustain for one hour without fatiguing. It’s the magic number from which you can establish intensity zones that guide your training and determine the power range you should target for each type of effort, from active recovery days to all-out sprint sessions.
Always-Dependable Battery Life
One of the aspects that impressed me most about the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro is its battery. HUAWEI claims up to 21 days of battery life in normal use, and the truth is, it comes very close to that. I’ve used it as my daily watch, receiving notifications, tracking sleep and doing several long rides each week, and I had to charge it less often than I expected. For a cyclist who combines training with daily life, this is a game-changing factor.
In continuous GPS mode, battery life reaches 40 hours of activity recording. That means you can tackle ultra-distance rides, 200 km events or even multi-day bikepacking trips without worrying about the charger. Compared to other watches that barely reach 20–25 hours, the difference here is clear. Can you imagine running out of battery and being unable to record your most epic day on the bike? Whether it’s to keep as a memory, share it with your friends, or analyze it in detail at home, that’s one of the most common nightmares for cyclists today.
High-Precision GPS and Map Navigation
The dual-band GPS precision of the HUAWEI
WATCH GT 6 Pro is another strong point. I tested it on the road, in dense forests
and in mountainous areas, and the track was always very clean. There aren’t interruptions in the
route that sometimes ruin later analysis, and its consistency in positioning is surprisingly precise
for such a compact and lightweight device.
On top of that, there’s a key feature for those of us who ride MTB and gravel: navigation with
integrated maps. Being able to load a route and follow it directly on your wrist is a huge
convenience. We don’t always carry the phone on a mount or a dedicated cycling GPS, and often
pulling it out of a pocket is uncomfortable or even risky.
I use Komoot to plan most of my rides, then just export the route as a GPX file. The HUAWEI
WATCH GT 6 Pro accepts all the common formats – GPX, TCX, and even KML – so
uploading is quick through the HUAWEI Health
App. Within minutes the course is on my watch,
ready to guide me without having to juggle my phone or a separate GPS device. You can even
connect your HUAWEI Health
and Komoot accounts and synchronize your routes, which is even easier
than exporting the route files.
Here, the watch performs well, showing the route clearly enough on screen. It’s not a dedicated
bike computer mounted on your handlebar, but as a practical solution it works very well. In
practice there’s little difference. Mounted on the bar is classic, but on the wrist the watch
nudges you with sound or vibration so you know when to glance, directing your GPS route with
voice announcements. Sure, on very steep or technical descents you’re not looking down anyway,
but that’s true for a head unit, too.
More Than Just a Watch
HUAWEI has made a big leap with its 1.47-inch AMOLED screen that reaches up to
3,000 nits of brightness. To put it in context: it’s one of the brightest watches on the market and
that makes a big difference when I’m training under the sun, and in conditions that may change from
one moment to another.
On a road ride with blazing sunshine, visibility is perfect. I don’t need to squint or tilt my wrist
to read the data. And when the light fades, the screen still shows crisp colors with strong
contrast. It can also be set with an always-on display, something that reduces battery life but
improves the experience if you want constant glanceable data.
When we talk about a sports watch, technology isn’t the only thing that matters, it also has to withstand tough use. In this sense, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro delivers. The combination of sapphire glass, titanium alloy, and Nano microcrystalline ceramic for the dial glass, case and bezel are designed to resist impacts and scratches. I wore it on MTB rides, where watches often scrape against branches or suffer accidental knocks, and I didn’t see a single mark on the case or the screen. That robustness is a guarantee that you won’t have to worry too much about babying it. It has a 5 ATM water resistance rating, meaning it can withstand water pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 meters, which is more than enough for swimming or training in the rain without any issues.
Health and Recovery Functions
Although my main use has been sports, it’s worth highlighting the health monitoring
features. The watch includes:
•ECG to record heart activity.
• Arrhythmia detection and heart rate variability (HRV).
•24/7 heart rate monitoring.
•Advanced sleep analysis.
•Blood oxygen (SpO₂) measurement.
•Fatigue detection through HRV.
For me as a professional mountain biker, I value heart rate monitoring around-the-clock and SpO₂
monitoring the most out of the HUAWEI
WATCH GT 6 Pro’s health-related features. Continuous heart rate data helps me
track exertion levels, recovery and my endurance during rides. After an intense descent, a quick
glance at my heart rate ensures that I haven’t overtrained. Blood oxygen is also crucial for
mountain bikers, as oxygen levels can drop at higher altitudes. Although uncommon at the
professional level of biking, it can help detect early signs of altitude fatigue or hypoxia. I
personally find it a good tool to adjust acclimatization during higher-altitude rides.
What’s interesting is that all this data is integrated into the HUAWEI Health App, giving you a clear picture of your physical state and how you recover after training. Personally, I found it useful to know when I was ready to push again and when it was better to take a rest day. In this regard, sleep tracking and analysis are crucial and serve as a clear indicator of your daily recovery level. By combining this information with other metrics like your morning resting heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and the HRV-based fatigue detection system, you can adjust your daily training sessions based on your body’s response. Additionally, the statistics and historical data collected in the app provide a comprehensive view of how each training period has impacted your body, enabling you to make improvements and rectify past mistakes.
Daily Use and Connectivity
I’ve been riding MTB for over 20 years, many of them professionally. During this
time, I’ve tried different sports watches, but I always ended up using them only for their basic
watch functions in daily life, without finding them particularly useful from a sports perspective.
Or the opposite, the watches I considered suitable for sports didn’t fit my idea of what I want from
a watch for everyday use. The HUAWEI
WATCH GT 6 Pro is the first watch that truly feels like it offers both:
everything I need to make it my daily watch, and all the key information I value when training.
My conclusion is clear: the HUAWEI
WATCH GT 6 Pro is a watch I would recommend to any cyclist looking for a
reliable, robust device with advanced functions. Its strengths are virtual power, long battery life,
GPS with maps, and durable construction.
Even in top-level training, it does democratizes access to power data and delivers it in a
convenient format, with a very competitive price-to-performance ratio. If you’re a multi-sport
athlete, the HUAWEI
WATCH GT 6 Pro is excellent, allowing you to track your activities across several
sports accurately and comfortably. All in a package that looks like a premium conventional watch,
with a refined design and high-quality finishes.
