My name is Elisa Scarlatta. I have been passionate about cycling for over 25 years. While I prefer road cycling, I also love mountain biking, where nature takes center stage and I can find my moments of sport, relaxation and peace.

In this article, I want to share some professional tips and insights on how to balance safety and adventure on the bike. Even if you are not a professional cyclist, I am sure you care about improving your performance and tracking your ride data afterwards — things like average speed, total ascent, distance, heart rate, power and calories burned. The new HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 is capable of tracking all of this, and much more.

Elisa Scarlatta, based in Biella, a small town in Northern Italy surrounded by hills and mountains: the perfect setting for a cyclist. Elisa mainly rides on the road, but also enjoys taking her mountain bike out from time to time, especially when she wants to disconnect and spend time in nature.

Cycling has always been part of her life, not just in a competitive sense, but as something that grounds, keeps active, and brings one together with others.

Why Choose a Smartwatch Instead of a Traditional Bike Computer?

For years, I also used handlebar-mounted devices, believing they were the most convenient option. But over time I realized their limitations: you cannot take them on a walk, to the pool or even into the office to check your daily step count. A smartwatch, on the other hand, is always with you – not just clipped to the bike. It tracks your performance data during every ride, but also accompanies you throughout the day and night. This means you don’t just get insights into speed, power and recovery, but a complete picture of your body. For example, the TruSense technology can measure your heart rate constantly, stress levels are tracked continuously, and sleep quality is analyzed across all phases of the night. Even heart rate variability (HRV) is recorded in detail, giving you direct feedback on recovery.

My First Adventure with the
HUAWEI WATCH GT 6

The premium design immediately caught my eye — a white leather strap (though other strap options such as fluoroelastomer are available), elegant and refined on the wrist, and extremely lightweight so it remains comfortable even when sweating. Thanks to its sophisticated design, I also wear it in the evening with more formal outfits. I’m wearing the smaller model, at 41mm, but there is also a larger, 46mm version suitable for larger wrists.

During my test ride of 56.4 kilometers near my hometown Biella, I deliberately chose my standard training route – one I know by heart, every climb, every descent, every turn. This made it easy to assess the watch’s precision. The course included a total ascent of 756 meters and gradients ranging from -30% to +18%, and yet the GPS track matched the route to within just a few meters thanks to the improved dual-band antenna architecture and the Sunflower Positioning System. Over 2 hours and 33 minutes in the saddle, I averaged 22.1 km/h at 127 watts, with a steady heart rate of 120 bpm. Even under direct sunlight, the display remained perfectly legible, ensuring that navigation and performance metrics were always visible at a glance. In addition to flawless orientation in both urban and mountainous terrain, the watch provided continuous monitoring of calorie expenditure (692 kcal in total, 546 kcal active), aerobic stress (3.6) and recovery status. One of the standout features is Virtual Power, a technology that estimates power output based on parameters like speed, rider weight, bike type, gradient and heart rate — saving you from buying costly power meters. This data not only monitors performance but also helps create personalized training plans.

As a lover of climbs, I appreciated having real-time altitude and total ascent directly on the watch. On a single screen I could also view heart rate (from the built-in sensor or via a connected chest strap), speed and distance. The auto-pause function worked flawlessly, instantly stopping at red lights and resuming the moment I started pedaling again.

Another new metric is FTP (Functional Threshold Power), the maximum power you can sustain for an hour without fatigue, which, unlike Virtual Power, requires an external power meter connected to the smartwatch. This is a key indicator for structuring workouts and evaluating performance. FTP matters in cycling because it provides a consistent and objective benchmark of a cyclist’s fitness level. It determines personalized training zones that not only track my progress, but gives me a point of reference for effective pacing. For endurance rides, this is huge as it helps me scale my workouts to my current fitness level – hence, applicable to cyclists of all skill levels.

Guardian Gear : Safety on the Bike

Safety is essential for every positive riding experience – whether on the daily commute or during long training sessions in nature. A helmet, a rear light, visible clothing and respecting traffic rules are the foundation. But when riding in the mountains, on gravel paths or in remote areas with challenging terrain, additional safety can make a decisive difference.

“Combining an elegant white leather strap with an extremely lightweight build, the
HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 is as versatile as it is stylish. It offers professional cycling functions while maintaining a refined look suitable for all scenarios.”

Here the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 adds real value: its integrated fall detection automatically recognizes when an accident occurs. If you crash on a steep descent, slip on loose gravel or lose control in a sharp bend, the watch immediately prompts you to call a chosen, preset contact person. Especially on nature rides far from the city, where help is not always nearby, this function provides an extra layer of security.

For me, as a cyclist who spends countless hours on mountain routes around Biella, this feature offers peace of mind: I can fully focus on my ride, while knowing that in case of a fall, assistance would be triggered without delay. It is one of those functions you hope never to need – but if the moment comes, you will be deeply grateful it is there.

A Match for Any Device

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 is fully compatible with both iOS and Android devices, ensuring seamless integration no matter which smartphone you use. It also connects effortlessly with the most popular cycling platforms such as Strava and Komoot, so every ride can be tracked, analyzed and, if interested, shared with your community.

All connections are managed through the HUAWEI Health App, which not only serves as a central hub for your training data but also allows you to fully customize the watch to your preferrences. For athletes who like to train with additional equipment, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 offers even more flexibility. I, for example, use an external power meter built into my pedals to measure my watt output with maximum precision and the watch connects seamlessly. The same goes for the chest strap I use because my tattoos can lead to less accurate optical readings during my trainings. The watch pulls in both the power meter and chest strap data and blends them directly into the workout analysis, which is perfect for me. This way I can expand it into a complete training ecosystem that perfectly adapts to road cycling, indoor sessions and even cross-discipline workouts.

The battery life is outstanding even on this 41mm watch: up to 14 days with light everyday use and still around 40 hours while continuously working out. It feels unusual – in a positive way – to start thinking about battery life in terms of weeks instead of hours. It’s the kind of reliability that makes you forget about charging altogether, until you check the percentage and notice there’s still plenty left. It gives me real peace of mind: even on long rides in the mountains or remote areas, I never worry that the battery might suddenly run out and leave me without navigation. Knowing the watch will last makes every adventure feel safer and more relaxed.

After the Ride

After the ride, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 doesn’t stop working. It actively supports recovery. Immediately after finishing a session, the watch continues to measure how long it takes for your heart rate to return to a calm baseline. Based on this, it calculates your recovery time and gives precise guidance on long you should rest before the next trip into the wilderness in order to keep the risk of injury as low as possible. In addition, it suggests a tailored stretching routine with detailed exercises, helping to release tension in the muscles you’ve just used.

After using the HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro, I found that the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 offered great upgrades for cyclists of all skill levels. Even without external equipment like a power meter, anyone who enjoys cycling can get real value out of this smartwatch, and explore the wilderness knowing that it has your back – whether it be the data that you can see during and after your exploration, or staying connected no matter what happens.

Integrated fall detection on the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 is one of those functions you hope never to need – but if the moment comes, you will be deeply grateful that it is there.
