Tracking Every Step:
How the

Enhances Trail Running Performance

Why is it that we feel happier when surrounded by nature? Research shows that being in nature improves both physical and psychological health [1]. Pulse rates decrease, stress reduced, and blood pressure lowers, among other benefits [2]. For me, nature—particularly mountains—brings a sense of freedom like nothing else.
The steep ascents with the hands on my thighs, the ridgy technical paths, the tricky descents where concentration is essential. But also, the sight of mountains, the smell of the trees, the sound of birds. All this, and more, give sense to my biggest passion: trail running.

My Journey into Trail Running
Before I dive deeper into my passion, let me tell you a bit about my running journey. I started running in 2011, when I decided to challenge myself with a half marathon. Shortly after that, at just 18 years old, I wanted to push my limits even further, so I registered for the Ironman 70.3 in my hometown. It was an amazing experience! Although I hadn't trained much for it, and it was incredibly tough, I loved the challenge. But something was missing. I soon realized that swimming wasn’t for me—but mountains definitely were. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been in the mountains with my family—camping, trekking, and later, running. Over time, I shifted away from triathlons and focused entirely on trail running. It started as a hobby, but eventually became a way of life. Fast forward to 2024, and I’m now a professional trail runner, competing mostly in the Skyrunning World Cup. Trail running has taken me to incredible places, where I can continue to follow my passion for both running and the mountains.
Breaking Down My Training: Intensity,
Endurance, and Strength
To maintain peak physical condition and continue excelling in my sport, I follow a structured training plan that balances intensity, endurance, strength, and recovery. My weekly schedule is designed to maximize performance while minimizing the risk of injury, ensuring that I can sustain my passion for the long term. My training is divided into the following key sessions:
• Intensity sessions: usually one or two per week
• Long sessions: around 3 to 5 hours
• Weight lift sessions: two times per week
• Recovery or short sessions: around 1 to 2 hours

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro provides a lot of different features that are key to increasing performance in trail running. With such a varying training calendar, a watch like this one is essential to track all sessions, record information on everyday training, and follow recovery.
To be able to train a high number of hours per week, long sessions and recovery sessions are sometimes done on the bike. This allows my body to recover from the impact of running and prevents injuries. Flat running is also important as part of my training, to increase speed and not get too heavy legs on all the uphill training!
The customizable sport-specific features provide all the essential information needed for each workout, allowing users to tailor and organize them based on their chosen activity. In the trail running mode, for example, the primary focus is often on metrics like elevation gain, heart rate, altitude, and distance. For outdoor running, a simpler feature set including pace, heart rate, and kilometers may be preferred. Meanwhile, cyclists typically prioritize data like power, distance, and speed. The ability to adapt these features to suit each sport is not only convenient but also highly beneficial for optimizing performance

Essential Tools for Tracking and Maintaining Fitness

One of the watch’s features that I find very useful is the Workout Status, which provides information on different data about the athlete shape. In particular, it shows:

a) VO2Max
VO2Max, or maximal oxygen uptake, is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense exercise. A higher VO2Max indicates better aerobic endurance and cardiovascular fitness. Thanks to the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro, I can keep track of my fitness and adapt my training routines accordingly.
b) Running Ability Index (RAI)
RAI is a performance metric that reflects the resistance and technical efficiency of a runner. It is very useful for monitoring progress and comparing performance against other runners.
c) Training Load
The watch collects the athlete training load from every training by means of the heart rate. This feature is quite important in order to avoid overtraining and adapt the training load depending on any upcoming competition.
d) Recovery
The most underestimated of all! Recovery is key to improve performance and get to competitions or important training days in good shape. In my case, I use it mostly before important competitions to make sure I am well rested and ready to give my best.
e) Exploring the Mountains: Trail Running Routes for Every Adventure
Another key feature for trail runners, especially those who, like me, love to explore different mountains and trails, is track navigation. As trail runners, we often compete across a variety of terrains, including mud, sand, rocks, forests, ridges, coastal paths, and even urban areas. The courses can vary in steepness and technical difficulty, making each race a unique challenge. All of this forces us to discover different places and mountains and train in places that are not always familiar. This is why track navigation like the one the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro is vital. The watch includes offline maps, and it is also possible to import and export routes that can then be followed in the new Trail-running mode that includes segments, contour lines, and elevation data. This feature also includes a screen showing the estimated completion time, which is re-computed often according to the pace of the runner.
From Start to Finish in Andorra: A Race Journey with the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro

I was able to test the watch during a three-day trail running race in Andorra, and it was incredibly useful! When racing, it is normal to easily get lost since we keep focus on the pace and surroundings, and sometimes even forget to follow the race markers. Other times, the markers are quite far away from each other, or weather circumstances can make it very difficult to see them. Having the track on the watch gave me a sense of security and confidence: no minutes would be lost, at least not due to bad orientation. Also, knowing an approximation of the time left helped measure my strength along the course and give my best.

In the mountains, orientation is crucial, since bad weather can come at any time. The precise GPS tracking and navigation present on the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro allows for a safe return home from all your mountain running courses.
Improving running form and posture
I believe that an athlete's performance can be significantly improved by correcting their running technique and posture. In fact, several studies have shown that running form is a key factor in both running efficiency and overall performance. Having access to this kind of information can be a major advantage for improving results, and the fact that the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro provides this data makes a big difference.
One standout feature of the watch is its ability to analyse an athlete’s running technique:

1. Ground contact time: Length of time that the foot is in contact with the ground between strides. Shorter ground contact times are generally associated with more efficient running mechanics, since they often have better speed and less fatigue over longer distances.
2. Balance: It is the ratio of the ground contact time of the left and right foot divided by the overall ground contact time. Ideally it should be around 50% for each foot. A severe imbalance may increase the risk of leg injuries.
3. Vertical oscillation: An indication of how your centre of gravity moves vertically as you run. Generally, a higher vertical oscillation means more energy is being wasted on vertical movement rather than forward movement.
After the race in Andorra, several key observations emerged. This screenshot from the HUAWEI Health App shows data from the exercise recorded on the final day of the race. As expected, after three days of intense racing, my fatigue levels were extremely high, and I needed a lot of rest afterward. While the average ground contact time and vertical oscillation were within normal ranges, I noticed a slight asymmetry between my left and right leg. This could be due to a heavy fall I took on my left side two weeks prior to the race, which still caused some discomfort during running. I plan to monitor this closely in future workouts to ensure the imbalance doesn’t worsen.

Conclusion
Overall, thanks to the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro I was able to perform at my best and win the Andorra trail! The different new features included in the watch are very helpful and practical and allow runners to know more about themselves and their body. The track navigation is particularly useful during racing and long mountain runs, and a must-have for me in most of my outdoor workouts. The watch itself is very easy to use, and the tactile screen is super nitid, which is really impressive. A thing to improve in the future, that could really benefit pro athletes, is the automatic syncing of workouts from and to third party platforms. Even so, the workouts can be exported from the HUAWEI Health App and manually uploaded to other platforms if needed.
