Gallery crashes or stops responding on my HUAWEI phone/tablet

Perform the following to troubleshoot:

1. Check the storage space

Go to Tablet Manager/Phone Manager > Cleanup and check whether your phone's/tablet's available storage space is greater than 10% (greater than 20% is preferred). If it isn't, free up some space.

If Gallery contains several thousand or more items, back them up to your computer, then delete photos that are not frequently used from your phone/tablet.

2. Delete Gallery and media storage data

  • Open Settings, search for and access Apps, find Gallery, then go to Storage > Clear data.
  • Open Settings, search for and access Apps, go to / > Show system processes, find Media Storage, then go to Storage > Clear data.

  • Deleting Gallery and Media Storage data will not delete photos in Gallery, but will delete the My favourites, Highlights, and Discover albums. The Highlights and Discover albums will be automatically created when your tablet/phone has been charged for some time with its screen off. You'll need to add photos to the My favourites album again.
  • Deleting the Media Storage data will reset your media settings, including the ringtone and notification tones. The system will scan the photos in your phone/tablet again. Wait for a while before you open Gallery again.

3. Uninstall and update Gallery

Open Settings, search for Apps, find Gallery, touch (if displayed) in the upper right corner, and touch Uninstall updates to restore Gallery to its factory settings. (If this path does not exist, Gallery is of the factory version. Skip this step.)

This operation will not delete photos in Gallery, but will delete the My favourites, Highlights, and Discover albums. The Highlights and Discover albums will be automatically created when your tablet/phone has been charged for some time with its screen off. You'll need to add photos to the My favourites album again.

4. If the issue remains unresolved

Your phone's/tablet's hardware may be faulty. Back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to an authorised Huawei Customer Service Centre for assistance.
