The computer freezes or takes a long time to start |
Solution:
To resolve this issue, perform the following:
- Disable apps that you do not need upon startup.
- Right-click any blank area on the taskbar.
- Click Task Manager.
- Click Startup. Right-click those apps that you do not want to run during startup and click Disable.
- Right-click any blank area on the taskbar.
- Clear and organise shortcuts and files into folders on the desktop to speed up computer startup speed. By organising into folders, less RAM space is used as the computer only needs to load the folder instead of individual apps or files.
- Remove unnecessary antivirus apps. Installing multiple antivirus programs on your computer means more memory required to run these programs and this results in slower computer speed. Furthermore, these programs may conflict and compete with each other to scan for viruses, which reduces computer performance.
- Press the Win and R at the same time to open the Run window, and enter appwiz.cpl.
- Right-click the antivirus apps you do not need and click Uninstall/Change.
- Press the Win and R at the same time to open the Run window, and enter appwiz.cpl.
- Uninstall incompatible third-party apps.
If this issue began after installing certain third-party apps, uninstall those apps and try again. Some third-party startup apps may be incompatible with Windows 10.
- Install software and apps in non-system drives.
Most software and apps are installed in the system drive (C drive) by default, and the computer takes a longer time to load as the number of programs and files increases. Allocate a different disk partition for some programs and apps, including those that you do not use frequently.
- Create a reasonable number of partitions.
The more partitions in the computer, the longer it takes to load all partitions during startup. It reduces computer performance as it has to read and write data from one partition to the other constantly.
- Change visual effects and virtual memory settings.
- Press the Win R keys at the same time to open the Run window and enter sysdm.cpl.
- Click Advanced and select Settings...under Performance. Select Custom and then uncheck the visual effects that you do not need.
- Click Advanced and then Change... under Virtual memory. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Then, select Custom size to change the virtual memory. Set a size that is at least one-fourth of the total Space available. Click OK. Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Press the Win R keys at the same time to open the Run window and enter sysdm.cpl.
- Change system settings.
Method 1: Change the number of processors.
- Right-click the Windows icon and click Run. Enter msconfig and click OK.
- Click General, and check Load system services and Load startup items under Selective startup.
- Click Boot > Advanced options. Check Number of processors and select the maximum number of processors from the drop-down list. Then, click OK. Enter 3 under Timeout:. Then, click OK.
Method 2: Turn on fast startup- Right-click the Windows icon and click Power Options.
- In the Power & sleep page, click Additional power settings.
- Click Choose what the power button does and then Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Check Turn on fast startup (recommended). Then click Save changes.
- Right-click the Windows icon and click Run. Enter msconfig and click OK.
