My HUAWEI phone/tablet cannot find WLAN hotspots

Problem:

The phone/tablet cannot find nearby WLAN hotspots.

Solution:

No WLAN hotspots can be found
  • Disable and then enable WLAN, and try again.
  • Search for and access Restore network settings in Settings, and enable Restore network settings. (Note: Restore network settings will restore all network settings, including WLAN, mobile data network, and Bluetooth settings, and will not delete other data or modify other settings.)
  • If the issue persists, back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to a nearby Huawei Customer Service Centre for assistance.

A specific WLAN hotspot cannot be found

1. The hotspot name (SSID) may be hidden.

Use another device to search for the hotspot. If the hotspot still cannot be found, the hotspot may be set to be hidden. Go to Settings > WLAN, and swipe down to the bottom of the list of available WLAN networks. Touch Add network, enter the name and password of the hotspot you want to connect to, and manually connect to the hotspot. Alternatively, disable the hotspot hiding feature of the router.

2. Ensure that the hotspot frequency band is supported by your phone/tablet.
  • Search for and access the AP band screen in Settings.
  • Search for and access the WLAN hotspot settings screen in Settings, touch Show advanced options, then touch AP band.

If your phone/tablet only supports 2.4 GHz WLAN, it cannot detect a 5 GHz WLAN hotspot. In this case, set the frequency band of your device to 2.4 GHz and try again. Contact the router administrator for assistance if needed.

If the Auto-switch or Prioritise 5 GHz feature is enabled on the router and only 5 GHz WLAN hotspots are available, disable this feature. You should now be able to find two types of hotspot names with their only difference being in the suffix (such as HUAWEI-XXXXXX for a 2.4 GHz hotspot and HUAWEI-XXXXXX_5G for a 5 GHz hotspot). You can connect to either of them based on your requirements.

3. Check whether the encryption type of the router is set to Enhanced Open, WPA3 Personal, or WPA3 Enterprise.

(Some device models do not support the preceding encryption modes.) If so, change the encryption mode of the router to Open/Enhanced Open, WPA2/WPA3 Personal, or WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise, as shown in the following figure.

4. If the issue persists, change the frequency band and channel settings of the router. Change your router's channels to 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz WLAN, and to channel 149 for 5 GHz WLAN, and then try again.

5. If you are not using a local edition phone/tablet (for example, when using a China edition phone/tablet outside China or using an international edition phone/tablet in China), the issue occurs because the WLAN network channels vary. In this case, insert a local SIM card, register with the local network, and then search for the hotspot again.

6. If this issue occurs when using a third-party app to search for hotspots, perform the following:
  • Swipe down from the upper right corner of your phone/tablet to access Control Panel, and enable Location.
  • Search for and access Permission Management in Settings, select Permission, and touch Location or Access location info to check whether the permission has been enabled for the app you are using.
  • Check whether the WLAN hotspot can be found on your device's WLAN settings screen. If so, the issue lies with the third-party app. In this case, update the app from AppGallery or use a similar app instead.

If the issue persists, back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to a nearby Huawei Customer Service Centre for assistance.
