Phone or tablet stops charging when the charging progress reaches 80%, and other FAQs related to Smart Charge

Problem:

  • When the phone or tablet battery is charged to 80% or higher, charging stops and the charging icon disappears.
  • A Smart Charge dialog box is displayed in the notification panel on the phone or tablet, or the Battery screen in Settings indicates that Smart Charge is enabled.

The Smart Charge feature is currently being released. Due to model or version differences, there are multiple forms of pop-up dialog boxes or display pages. Please refer to the actual product. If the dialog box is not displayed, update your phone to the latest version.

    Cause:

This is a new feature on some Huawei phone models (running EMUI 9.1 & Magic UI 2.1 and later versions). It is a protection mechanism.

The AI smart battery management effectively extends the Battery lifespan. When the charging protection function of Smart Charge is enabled, a notification will be displayed. It is advised that you enable Smart Charge to better protect your device's battery.

    Solution:

Method 1: To fully charge your phone immediately, touch CONTINUE in the Smart Charge dialog box in the notification panel. If you touch GOT IT, Smart Charge will continue to protect your battery.

Method 2: Turn off Smart Charge by going to Settings > Battery > More battery settings > Smart Charge. This helps prolong the battery lifespan. (If this switch is not available, it indicates that your device does not currently support this function.)

If the issue persists, it may not be caused by Smart Charge. In this case, back up your data and take your device and proof of purchase to an authorised Huawei Customer Service Centre for assistance.

① Information about charging habits is only used locally and will not be backed up or uploaded to the cloud.

Smart Charge does not take effect for all users, and it depends on users' charging habits. The features and GUIs may vary according to the product and software version.

    Question

    Answer

What is Smart Charge? How does it protect Battery?

Smart Charge is a new battery protection feature for selected Huawei phone models. When you charge your phone for a long time, the built-in AI module can learn from your charging habits, your settings including the alarm clock and time zone, and other configuration information, and intelligently manage the charging status. For example, charging will pause when the battery level reaches about 80% at night. Before you get up, charging will resume to fully charge your phone. This prevents your phone from being charged while its battery is already full, thereby effectively prolonging the lifespan of the battery.

Does Smart Charge affect the charging speed?

No, it does not. Smart Charge is designed for users who are used to charging overnight, or for a long time. For example, when you charge your phone overnight, charging will be paused when the charging progress reaches about 80%, and it will resume before you get up. This mode does not affect the charging speed and power of your device and can effectively prolong the battery lifespan. It is recommended that you keep this mode enabled.

Does Smart Charge increase power consumption or affect battery life?

No, it does not. The battery life depends on the usage scenario and battery ageing. Smart Charge is designed to slow down battery ageing without affecting the power consumption and battery life of the device.

    Unable to find Smart Charge

Smart Charge is a new feature on some Huawei phone models running EMUI 9.1, Magic UI 2.1, or later versions. If you cannot find this feature, it indicates that this feature may not be available yet on your device. Please stay tuned for the latest information.

My device still charges to 100% after Smart Charge is enabled. Why?

Smart Charge does not take effect in all charging scenarios for all users, and it depends on users' charging habits. The possible cause is that the system has not learnt from your charging habits yet, or you do not have the habit of charging your phone overnight or for a long time. Please refer to the actual product.

Will my device heat up if I enable Smart Charge?

No, it won't. Smart Charge is a battery protection feature that does not increase power consumption or cause your device to heat up. It is recommended that you keep this feature enabled.
