I forget the startup password of my HUAWEI computer

Problem

The user forgets the startup password of a HUAWEI computer and cannot access the system.

Solution

Check the entered password

  1. Recall whether the password has been changed: It is recommended that you confirm whether you or someone else has changed the password. If necessary, check with close friends and family to see if they might have set the password while you were away from your computer. Enter the password after you recall it.
  2. Check case and special characters: Check whether the entered password contains uppercase and lowercase letters and special characters such as underscores (_). Click the eye icon to check whether the password is correct. Try your common passwords (such as those consisting of special dates or numbers).

Switch to other login options

5 unlock methods are available on Windows.

Use PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint unlock: If your HUAWEI laptop has a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint unlock feature enabled, and the unlock method works properly, you can try to log in to the system using any of these methods.

Retrieve password

Check whether your login account is a local account or Microsoft account. The sign-in name of a Microsoft account is usually a mobile number or email address.

  1. Local account login:
    1. Password unlock screen: If you enter an incorrect password, go to OK > Reset password as instructed, and answer the security questions as prompted.
    2. PIN unlock screen: Click Login options, and then click the key icon. If you enter an incorrect PIN, click Reset password as instructed, and answer the security questions as prompted.

If you enter an incorrect password, the Reset password option will be displayed only after you click OK.

    3. Change the password using commands: If you cannot answer the security questions, you can change the password using commands.
      1. Restart the computer. During startup, press F8 repeatedly. On the displayed Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot. On the displayed Advanced options screen, select CMD.

If the system still asks you to enter the password after you enter the command prompt, the current system version may not be Windows 11 Home (Chinese). In this case, you are advised to Use F10 to restore a HUAWEI Windows computer to its factory settings. If this does not work, you are advised to reinstall the system.

      2. Enter the following commands in the command prompt. Each command ends with pressing the Enter key:

        C:

        cd Windows

        cd System32

        ren Utilman.exe Utilman.exe.bak

        copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe

      3. Restart the computer, open the login screen, click the person icon in the lower right corner to open the command prompt window, and enter "net user" to query all local accounts.

      4. Enter the "net user + local account name + new password" command, for example, "net user L3 321" (reset the password of the local account L3 to "321"), and press Enter. The password of the local account is reset.

Close the command prompt window, return to the login screen, and enter the new password to log in.

      5. Search for "CMD" in the Start menu, right-click the search result, and choose Run as administrator from the shortcut menu. In the CMD window, enter "sfc /scannow" and press Enter to restore the system files that have been modified.
  2. Microsoft account (The account name is usually a mobile number or email address):
Reset PIN: If I forgot my PIN is displayed, click this option and enter the Microsoft account password as prompted to reset the PIN. After the PIN is reset, use the new PIN to log in.

Connect your device to the Internet: On the screen for entering the password, click the earth icon in the lower right corner and enter the Wi-Fi password to connect to the network. If the network cannot be connected, change the network environment or use USB tethering on your phone.

Share your network via USB on your phone:

    1. Use a USB data cable to connect a phone (Android or HarmonyOS) to your computer.
    2. On your phone, go to Settings > Mobile network > Personal hotspot > More sharing settings, enable USB tethering, wait until the network icon in the lower right corner of the computer changes to the computer icon, and check whether the computer can access the Internet.

If you forget the Microsoft account password, reset the Microsoft account password and then reset the PIN.

    Reset the Microsoft account password:

    1. On the screen where you need to enter the Microsoft account password, select Forgot password.
    2. Select the verification code receiving method and click Get code.

    3. The security code will be sent to the alternate email address or phone number. If you cannot see it, check the spam folder. If you still cannot see it, try another verification method. Enter the security code in Verify your identity, and then click Next.

    4. Enter a new password in New password to reset your Microsoft account password. Enter the new password again in Confirm new password.

The password must contain at least eight characters, including two types of the following characters: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, and symbols.

    5. Then, reset the PIN to access the system.

Reset the password using the security key USB flash drive

If the page shows inserting a USB flash drive to reset the password, you can insert a secure key USB flash drive to reset the password. If you do not have such a drive, you cannot log in to the system using a local account and its password. Take another way to log in.
