My HUAWEI phone/tablet cannot receive SMS messages

Unable to receive certain SMS messages

The phone/tablet does not receive SMS messages from certain numbers, but it receives replies from a carrier number.

  1. Check whether you have set a blocklist to block messages

    Go to Blocked in Optimizer/Tablet Manager, and check whether the contacts have been added to Blocklist. Remove the number from Blocklist as required and try again: Go to Optimizer/Tablet Manager > Blocked > Block rules > Blocklist, touch and hold the number to be removed, and then touch Delete.

  2. Check whether you have enabled the feature of blocking unknown SMS messages

    Go to Blocked in Optimizer/Tablet Manager, and check whether the contacts have been added to Block unknown numbers. If so, turn off the Block unknown numbers switch. For example, go to Optimizer > Blocked > Message block rules > Block unknown numbers.

  3. Check whether you are using a third-party security management app that blocks messages

    Some security management apps may block certain SMS messages. It is recommended that you uninstall any such apps.

  4. Check whether the numbers have been saved to PrivateSpace

    Open Settings, search for and access PrivateSpace, open Messaging, and check whether there are any received messages. If so, transfer the Contacts you need to MainSpace by performing the following steps and try again.

    1. In PrivateSpace, open Settings, search for and access PrivateSpace, and touch PrivateSpace to MainSpace.
    2. Select the content you wish to transfer (for example, Contacts), touch MOVE, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the transfer.
  5. Please find the blocked SMS message in the following ways and see if it is an ad or junk message. If it is a normal message that is blocked by mistake, please contact Huawei hotline to report the issue. We will do our best to address your needs.

    Go to Optimizer > Blocked.

Unable to receive all SMS messages

  1. Check whether you are using a third-party messaging app

    Certain third-party SMS messaging apps may be incompatible. If you are using a third-party messaging app, open Settings, search for and open Default apps, and set Messaging to Default. Swipe down from the status bar, enable and then disable Airplane mode, and try again.

  2. Disable the Don't keep activities switch and set Background process limit to Standard limit
    Go to Settings > System & updates > Developer options > Apps, disable Don't keep activities, and set Background process limit to Standard limit.

    Developer mode requires a basic understanding of the functions and features on your phone/tablet. Incorrect settings may cause your phone/tablet to malfunction. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you disable this mode during daily use.

    To enable Developer options, open Settings, enter About phone or About tablet in the search box, and touch About phone or About tablet. Touch the EMUI version number seven times in quick succession until a message displays indicating that you are in Developer mode.

  3. Insert the SIM card into another phone or tablet to check whether the SIM card can receive messages
    • If the other device is also unable to receive messages, contact your carrier.
    • If the other device can receive messages, the VoLTE network may be abnormal. Contact your carrier to subscribe to the VoLTE service again.

If the issue persists, restore the messaging and network settings.

  1. Restore the default settings for Messaging To do so, go to Messaging > / > Settings > Advanced > / and select Restore default settings.
  2. Reset network settings. Open Settings, search for and access Reset network settings, touch Network settings reset, and check whether SMS messages can be received.

    This will only reset Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth settings (such as hotspot connection and Bluetooth pairing), and won't affect other data or files.
