Many of the 32 million deaf children in the world struggle to read. At Huawei we believe AI can make a positive difference to the world, and push the limits of what is humanly possible. So we worked in partnership with experts and charities including the European Union of the Deaf and the British Deaf Association, to create StorySign. Watch our Christmas story, by Academy Award®-winning director Chris Overton.
A deaf child can’t hear their parents read them a bedtime story. Or their teacher read words from a textbook. Plus, 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, some of whom do not know sign language. All of this means many deaf children struggle to match printed words with the things they represent, which has a big impact on their lives.
So Huawei worked in partnership with experts and charities including the European Union of the Deaf and the British Deaf Association, to create StorySign. The StorySign app is developed with Huawei AI technology, available to all on Android via the Google Play Store. A free app that reads selected children’s books and translates them into sign language to help deaf children learn how to read. The StorySign avatar has been designed by Aardman Animations, and includes classic children’s book from Penguin Random House.
Right now, millions of deaf children are struggling to enjoy the wonderful world of books. By making a donation to our charity partners, you will help support literacy programmes including the future development of StorySign.
