At Huawei our mission is to make the world a better place, we believe that technology should enrich people’s lives and AI can extend the boundaries of what is humanly possible.

Many of the 32 million deaf children in the world struggle to read. We believe Huawei AI technology can help to open the world of books to them children.

This is why we developed StorySign, an app powered by Huawei AI that reads selected children’s books and translates them into sign language. StorySign is available to all on the Google Play Store in ten European countries. It is free to download and use.

StorySign was developed in partnership with the European Union of the Deaf and the British Deaf Association with a joint mission to raise awareness of deaf child literacy and to inspire people and organisations to get involved and support their local deaf charity. The money raised through donations will be used by the charities to fund deaf literacy projects, one of which is more books for StorySign.

      How StorySign works?

StorySign is a free app, that reads selected children’s books and translates them into sign language, to help deaf children learn how to read.

This is how it works. First, the child or parent opens the app and clicks on the selected book from the StorySign library. Then they hold their phone up to the words on the page, and our friendly avatar, Star, signs the story as the printed words are highlighted. This allows parents and children to learn to sign and read together, at their own pace.

StorySign is powered by Huawei AI, supported by charities including the European Union of the Deaf and the British Deaf Association, designed by Aardman Animations, with a classic children’s books from Penguin Random House.

      Meet the Star of StorySign

Our friendly avatar, Star, has been designed by Aardman Animations to bring books to life through sign language. Working with our charity partners, we used state-of-the-art motion capture technology to ensure that Star's facial expressions and hands deliver perfect sign language, so that deaf children can be as entertained by a wonderful story as their hearing friends.

Help change the story of deaf literacy

Right now, millions of deaf children are struggling to enjoy the wonderful world of books. By making a donation to our charity partners, you will support literacy programmes including the future development of StorySign.
