Inaccurate step count on my HUAWEI watch/band

1. Update your watch/band

The accelerometer is used to count steps. The watch/band may sometimes mistake bumps in the road or arm movements as steps during daily life scenarios (such as cycles, drives, vehicle commutes, and housework like dish washing), leading to inaccurately increased step count by a small number. To provide you with a more accurate step counting experience, we will continue to optimize the algorithm. The new version will optimize the logic for miscounting steps, minimizing miscounting in certain daily scenarios when your arms are swung. Please update your watch/band to the latest version as soon as possible.

2. Standardize walking methods to improve step counting accuracy

To obtain more accurate step count data, it is recommended that you walk continuously for about 20 to 50 steps while swinging your arms naturally during daily walking. Our step counting algorithm requires about 15 seconds for confirmation, which effectively avoids step counting errors caused by non-standard movements.

Your watch/band may fail to record your steps in real time if you walk a few steps and suddenly stop or if your walking posture is not recognized. However, these steps will eventually be tallied in the total step count.

3. Adjust the wearing mode to ensure that the sensor fits properly

The tightness of your device directly impacts the accuracy of the accelerometer. Wear your watch/band on the inner side of your wrist (about 1–2 cm away from your wrist bone) so that it can fit snugly and not press against your skin.

4. Restart your watch/band to rule out running faults

If your device is not restarted for a long time, background processes may be abnormal, affecting the step counting feature. Press and hold the Power button (Up button/Side button) on your watch/band for 3–8 seconds, and select Restart on the screen. After your watch/band restarts, swing your arms and walk for more than 20 steps again to check whether steps can be counted correctly.

5. Manually sync data and calibrate step count statistics

If data on the Huawei Health app is not synced with that on your watch/band, the step count may look inaccurate. Open Huawei Health, go to Me > Settings > Sync data manually, tap SYNC, and wait until the progress bar reaches 100%. Then check whether the step count data is the same as that on your watch/band.

6. Restore to factory settings

If the issue persists, restore your watch/band to its factory settings, pair it with your phone again, and try again.

  • A factory reset will clear all personal data from the wearable device, and remove any transportation cards, access cards, bank cards, and car keys. Please exercise caution before proceeding.
  • Before restoring factory settings, back up important data to avoid data loss. It is recommended that you swipe down on the home screen of the Huawei Health app to sync data and wait until the data is synced successfully.

7. If the issue persists

If none of the above resolves the issue of inaccurate step count data on your watch/band, please call the Huawei customer service hotline for further assistance.

If step count data is still unavailable on your watch/band, take your device and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
