Introduction
In recent years, the technology boom has led to an increase of sedentary lifestyle, which poses several health risks. This is why it is important for all humans, regardless of our age, to apply any needed lifestyle change to reduce sedentarism. And what better way to achieve this than doing what our bodies are made for? Just going outside and running!

HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro: Essential Features for Runners
Even if we are running like our ancestors (maybe without the need to hunt), injuries can appear and complicate things. Technology might be at fault for the increase of sedentarism in the past decades, but we can also use it to get out of it. Wearable devices exist that can monitor our posture, movement and physiology to mitigate injury risks. Here is where the new HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro comes in, a must have for any outdoor sports enthusiast and specially, runners. This state-of-the-art watch includes a set of different features to mitigate the risk of injury and continuously monitor performance and running form.
In particular, when recording a workout with the HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro , we can later analyse a set of parameters using the HUAWEI Health App. These include cadence, stride length, ground contact time and balance or vertical oscillation, among others.
Other parameters that can be tracked with the running watch are the training stress, the VO2max and the recovery time features. These factors are essential to individualize training and follow the timeframes of each body. In particular, I am quite fond of the training stress and the recovery time features.
Training stress measures the level of stimulation that a single exercise exerts on the body. Too much training stress in consecutive exercises can lead to overtraining, which rapidly decreases performance and forces the athlete to radically stop training. Too low, and performance can get stuck.
Recovery time indicates the duration required to fully recover from the fatigue caused by a training session. It is also very important to try to recover as much as possible between sessions, to be able to perform at the next one, but also to decrease the risk of overtraining.
For endurance athletes who spend hours, or even days, in the outdoors, battery life is everything. The HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro delivers exceptional longevity with up to 10 days of usage in standard mode and 7 days of maximum usage. This means you can track ultra-long training sessions, multiday hikes or stage races without worrying about running out of power.
How to use your Smartwatch for Outdoor Runs
Before heading out, it’s essential to choose the correct workout mode. The HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro offers a variety of running profiles, whether it’s a trail run, road run, or treadmill session, each optimized to track specific metrics and deliver the most relevant feedback based on your activity type.
Setting pace goals helps runners stay within a specific intensity zone, which is crucial for endurance building and performance optimization. On the HUAWEI Health App, you can set personalized pace zones under your workout settings and receive real-time alerts if you're running too fast or too slow, keeping your training targeted and efficient.
Using the GPS route planner, by uploading and following custom routes directly from the HUAWEI Health App or third-party services such as Komoot. This is ideal for exploring new trails or sticking to tried-and-true paths, with visual guidance and live positioning always at your wrist.
As you run, the smartwatch analyses biomechanics such as cadence, stride length, and vertical oscillation. This data helps you understand and refine your running form in real time, reducing injury risk and improving overall efficiency.
With continuous heart rate, SpO2, and stress monitoring, the HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro gives you real-time feedback on your physical condition during any run. These insights allow you to adjust pace or intensity on the fly , ensuring a safe and productive session every time.
Using the HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro and HUAWEI FreeBuds 6 during my Outdoor Activities
Trail runners are usually spending a lot of time on the mountains, not only running but also
cycling, or even skiing or hiking. Cross training has proven to be beneficial to reduce
injury risk, particularly from repetitive strain, and to increase performance by building
specific muscles.
In my case, I like cycling in summer and ski touring in winter. These two sports allow me to
spend many hours training outdoors while reducing the impact of running.
I have been testing the new HUAWEI
WATCH FIT 4 Pro smartwatch while running, trail
running,
cycling and skiing and it is truly great. The smaller size is perfect for my wrist, and I
feel how light and comfortable it is to wear. The newly added barometer also helps me
measure my altitude at greater heights.
When I’m outdoors, everything needs to work seamlessly frommy shoes, my pack, my pace, to my
music. The HUAWEI FreeBuds
6 have also become a solid part of my gear setup. They stay in
place without causing any pressure, even on longer runs or rough downhills. In terms of
sound, they deliver consistently, whether I’m cruising at an easy pace or pushing hard
during intervals. No distortion, no muddiness , just clean, full sound. The connection to my
watch stayed stable the whole time, even out in the woods. With a quick tap, I can skip
tracks or take a call without breaking stride. These FreeBuds just get the job done without
demanding attention, and that’s exactly what I want from gear, reliable, functional, and out
of the way.
The smartwatch includes GPS guiding features to follow tracks from different types of workouts. In particular, the dual-frequency sunflower positioning system together with the offline colour maps is extremely useful in my outdoor activities. Dual-frequency GPS is a positioning gold standard, therefore its precise position and bright screen make following a route very easy.
To upload the routes, it is as easy as going on the HUAWEI Health App and importing the route on your profile tab (you can also use Komoot for an easy and fast integration). Once imported, the routes will be available on your smart health watch, and you can select them before starting your workout. The route will then be an extra card to choose besides the default ones that come with the chosen type of workout. You can easily zoom in and out and check for streets or paths to follow. I find its use very intuitive and helpful while training.
‘The new HUAWEI WATCH FIT 4 Pro is the perfect union of style, sport and comfort’
Another feature that has surprised me is the watch’s ability to measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). As a mountaineer, I can spend days training in high altitude, and even racing at altitudes higher than 4000 meters. This can result in low SpO2 which can lead to dizziness and headaches, and mean that I may not be adapted to the high altitude.
On my last ski touring session, I went up to almost 3000 meters, and I kept track of my SpO2 levels in order to see if they decreased at some point. Luckily, I felt great, and my levels were at 99% the whole time. This was very useful data since next week I will be doing a race where I spend a lot of time at altitudes higher than 4000 meters, and I hope my body is well prepared for it!
Heart rate tracking in athletes is a critical tool for optimizing performance, preventing overtraining and enhancing safety. Historically, heart rate has been used to train in specific intensity zones to optimize performance. In particular, by means of an effort test, both aerobic and anaerobic thresholds can be found, which are then related to a specific individualized heart rate value. Athletes can use these values to train aerobic and anaerobic performance.
But in recent years, we have been seeing more and more how heart rate is used to monitor
recovery and even detect illnesses and physical abnormalities. The HUAWEI
WATCH FIT 4 Pro
includes all-new heart rate variability (HRV) indicators that compare and analyse daily data
to detect physical anomalies and provide health tips and give you your average running heart
rate. It also provides sleep information on the variety of sleep types (REM, deep sleep,
light sleep), and helps users create a bedtime routine.
Good rest is key for performance. Sleep quality and duration directly impact physical
output, recovery and injury risk.
‘Sleep is as a non-negotiable pillar of athletic success, enabling peak physical output, rapid recovery, and long-term resilience.’
Final Thoughts: Maximizing Your Runs with Smart Tech
The HUAWEI
WATCH FIT 4 Pro includes everything you need for both your daily life, and your
athletic life. Its long battery life allows you to wear it for more than a week without
charging, while training every day. The new altitude features make it useful for
mountaineers and hikers, as well as trail runners. And the advanced satellite and signal
modes, together with the custom positions algorithms and offline maps, make it
straightforward to use in any circumstance.
I can say that the HUAWEI
WATCH FIT 4 Pro has helped make my training sessions
easier,
thanks to the GPS guiding feature, and keep track of particularly important parameters such
as sleep or SpO2. The data evaluated in the HUAWEI Health App
enabled me to target specific
points to improve in my running economy.
I will definitely bring it with me for my next race on the 4000 of the Italian Alps and
check how my blood oxygen saturation levels evolve with the altitude, as well as my heart
rate variability. Will I be able to recover quickly after an intense workload like this?
Will I need some weeks of rest? I believe this watch will really help me know more about my
body and especially how high-altitude training like this affects it.
