Differences between GPS positioning and base station positioning

Working principles

  • To implement GPS positioning, the GPS module on the phone sends its location information to the background positioning server. Then the phone position will be calculated based on the data provided by the GPS satellites.
  • In base station positioning, the phone position is calculated by determining how far way it is from the base stations forming the carrier network.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • GPS positioning is performed based on satellites for more accurate results, but consumes more power. In addition, it takes a while to search for satellite signals when GPS positioning is initiated. When the satellite signal reception is poor, for example, when the phone is placed indoors, GPS positioning may fail to work.
  • The precision of base station positioning is affected by the density of base stations and their coverage area. Base station positioning is inferior to GPS positioning in terms of precision, but it works even when the phone is placed indoors (as long as there is carrier network signals).
