Garbled characters are displayed after a document is opened or in the file name on my HUAWEI computer

Office apps are developed by Microsoft and are only connected to the Microsoft activation server. Linking the apps with a Microsoft account once will take effect permanently. It is recommended that you contact Microsoft's customer service for assistance. You can also try the following solutions.

Please check whether garbled characters are displayed in all your documents.

  1. If this issue only occurs in one document, perform the following:
    1. Open the corresponding Office app, for example, Word, and go to File > Open > Browse.

    2. Select the document where garbled characters are displayed and select Open and Repair. If the characters are still displayed incorrectly, the original document may be corrupted.

  2. If this issue occurs in all documents (including the names of external storage USB flash drives or other drive letters)

This may happen because the language set in the Microsoft Office app is not consistent with the system language or the language for non-Unicode programs.

    1. To check the language used in your Office suite, open an Office app, such as Word, go to File > Options > Language, and check the default language used in the Office component.

    2. To check your system language, click the Windows icon and then the Settings icon, go to Time & Language > Language, and check the current system language.

    3. To view non-Unicode languages, enter Control Panel in the search box in the lower left corner of the taskbar and open it, and go to Clock and Region > Region > Administrative. Under Language for non-Unicode programs, click Change system locale, select the corresponding language, deselect Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support, click OK, and restart the computer.
