Map network drive |
Mapping a network drive is a way of connecting to a shared network folder. Users can use this function to store their personal data on another computer or transfer data from another computer to their own device. A mapped drive is a shortcut to a shared folder on a remote computer or server that makes accessing its files similar to using a local hard drive. The shortcut on your computer looks just like one for a local hard drive with its own letter assigned to it and opens as if it were, but all the files in the mapped drive are actually physically stored on another computer.
Before creating a mapped drive, ensure that both computers are in the same network and a shared folder has been created.
Method 1:
- Press Win + E to display File Explorer. Go to This PC > Map network drive > Map network drive.
- Enter the IP address and tables of contents of the computer on which you want to create a mapped drive under Folder:, and click Finish.
To check the IP address of the computer that shares the mapped drive, click the network icon and then Network & Internet settings. Click Wi-Fi and then the connected network to see the IP address displayed after the IPv4 address under Properties.
- You can view your newly created mapped network drive in This PC.
Method 2:
- Press Win + R to display the Run window and enter \\ and the IP address (for example, \\192.168.8.105) after Open:.
- In the opened shared file, right-click the folder to which you want to map the network drive, select Map network drive and click Finish.
- You can check the mapped drive that you created in This PC.
