The available space in C drive is reduced after a Windows system update

Problem:

The available space in C drive is reduced after a Windows system update

Cause:

Windows.old is an old system file that is automatically backed up during system updates, backups and restorations. It is located in C drive, and occupies much of C drive's space. Therefore, you need to clear the Windows.old folder in order to create more space in C drive.

Solution:

If you are sure you do not need old system files, you can clear the disk to delete the folder and free up space in C drive. To perform this, follow the steps below.

  1. Press the Win and E keys at the same time, to open the File Explorer. Right-click Windows(C:) and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. In the displayed window, click Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files. The system will scan the Windows installation files.

  2. After the scan has completed, check Previous Windows installation(s) under Files to delete, and click OK. The system will then display the following message: "Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files ?" Select Delete Files, and wait until the system processing has completed. The Windows.old folder in C drive will be cleared.
