Deleting the hiberfil.sys file on the computer

Your computer has a built-in hiberfil.sys file, and you can set the Sleep option in Power Options. However, the hiberfil.sys file is usually saved in the C drive, which occupies a large amount of system space (about 3 GB). To save space, you can perform the following steps to delete it.

Once the hiberfil.sys file is deleted, you will not be able to set the Sleep option in Power Options.

  1. View the hiberfil.sys file on the computer.

    (1) Press the Win and E keys at the same time to open File Explorer and select the C drive. Click View and then click Options. In the Folder Options window, click the View tab and deselect Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). In the displayed Warning window, click Yes, then click OK.

    (2) You can see the hiberfil.sys file in the C drive.

  2. Search for "cmd" in the search box on the taskbar and select Run as administrator.

  3. Enter the powercfg -h off command and press the Enter key. You will then notice that the hiberfil.sys file has been deleted from the C drive.

To restore the hiberfil.sys file, enter the powercfg -h on command.
