The display is erratic, the screen flickers, or identification failure occurs when an external device is connected to the computer using an HDMI cable

Problem

After the user connects the computer to an external device using a long HDMI cable, the display is erratic, the screen flickers, or identification failure occurs.

Cause

The HDMI specification is HDMI 1.4b, and the maximum signal output is 4K@30 fps. If the HDMI cable is too long, it will affect signal quality and result in the display being erratic, the screen flickering, or identification failure.

Solution

  1. Use a shorter HDMI cable (less than 15 meters) and try again.
  2. Lower the HDMI output resolution or refresh rate and try again.

To adjust the resolution, perform the following steps:

    1. On the Windows 10 desktop, search for "Settings" in the search box next to the Start icon, and click the Settings app in the pop-up window.

    2. In the Windows Settings window, click System in the upper left corner.

    3. Click Display in the left pane of the System settings window.

    4. Select the lowest resolution for Display resolution.

To adjust the refresh rate, perform the following steps:

    1. On the Windows 10 desktop, search for "Settings" in the search box next to the Start icon, and click the Settings app in the pop-up window.

    2. In the Windows Settings window, click System in the upper left corner.

    3. Click Display in the left pane of the System settings window.

    4. Click Advanced display settings, and then click Display adapter properties for Display 1.

    5. You can then see the graphics card properties window. Click the Monitor tab and select a low screen refresh rate.

      3. If the issue persists and you have confirmed that the external device is not faulty, back up your data and bring your device and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
