A red "X" is displayed on the speaker icon when no external audio device is connected to the computer

Problem

If no external audio output device (such as a pair of headphones, a speaker, or a monitor without a built-in speaker) is connected to the computer, there will be a red "X" displayed on the speaker icon on the taskbar.

Cause

The computer is not equipped with a built-in speaker. Therefore, if no external audio device is connected to the computer, a red "X" is displayed on the taskbar.

Solution

This does not indicate any issues with your computer. If you connect an external audio output device (such as a pair of headphones, a speaker, or a monitor with a built-in speaker) to your computer, there will not be a red "X" displayed on the speaker icon on the taskbar.
