Extending the C drive on a HUAWEI computer

Prerequisites

Disk extension and merging must be done between adjacent partitions, and the two disks must be of the same type. For instance, if you want to extend the C drive, merge the D drive to the C drive and then re-create the C and D drives. Please note that an SSD cannot be merged with an HDD for mutual extension even though they are next to each other.

For more information about disk management, visit the Microsoft official website.

Procedure

  • You need to check whether the desktop files are stored in the C drive or D drive, and ensure that the desktop files are complete.
  • Merging the D drive with the C drive will clear all data on the D drive, so back up data on the D drive before merging. Otherwise, data will be lost. If an app is installed on the D drive, you will then need to reinstall the app after merging.
  • For details about how to back up data, see Backing up a HUAWEI computer's hard disk data.
  1. Back up data in the D drive to the C drive or an external storage device such as a portable hard drive.
  2. On the taskbar at the bottom, right-click and select Disk Management.

  3. In the Disk Management window, right-click the D drive and select Delete Volume. In the displayed dialog box, select Yes.

If the Delete Volume button is grayed out, refer to The Format and Delete Volume buttons are grayed out on a HUAWEI computer.

  4. After the deletion, an Unallocated space will display. Right-click the C drive and select Extend Volume. In the displayed Extend Volume Wizard window, extend the volume as prompted. In this way, the volume of the D drive will be merged to the C drive.

    • Hard disk vendors use the following formulas: 1 GB = 1000 MB, 1 MB = 1000 KB, and 1 KB = 1000 bytes.
    • The disk volume displayed on Windows 10 follows the formulas: 1 TB = 1024 GB, 1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 MB = 1024 KB, and 1 KB = 1024 bytes. Therefore, the actual disk volume may differ from the displayed value.
    • For example, if your computer's hard drive has an advertised storage capacity of 512 GB, its actual storage capacity is about 477 GB (512 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000) / (1024 x 1024 x 1024) in the Windows 10 operating system.

  5. In the Disk Management window, right-click the C drive and select Shrink Volume. Enter the amount of space you wish to shrink in Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB (that is, the space allocated to the new drive. In this case, 1 GB = 1024 MB), and click Shrink.

  6. Right-click the blank partition that is not allocated, select New Simple Volume, then follow the onscreen instructions to allocate space for the C and D drives.
