Migrating files from the C drive to another drive (such as the D drive)

The C drive is the computer's system disk. To ensure the running speed of the system, it is recommended that you reserve certain storage space on the C drive.

If you wish to migrate files from the C drive to a non-system drive (for example, the D drive), select an appropriate migration mode based on the file type.

File type

Supports cutting files to other non-system disks or not

Migration mode

Software installed on the C drive

No.

Directly cutting the file may cause the software to be unavailable.

If you wish to transfer software from the C drive to a non-system drive, it is recommended that you:

  1. Uninstall the software that has been installed.

To uninstall the software, press Win+I to open the Settings window, and go to Apps > Apps & features. In the app list, select the app you wish to uninstall and follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall it.

  2. Reinstall the software. During the software installation, change the installation path to a non-system disk as prompted.

System files

No.

Direct cutting may result in the system being unavailable, so please exercise caution when performing this operation.

Generally, a message is displayed when you cut a system file. In this case, cancel the operation as prompted.

Non-system files

Yes.

  • You can cut non-system files (such as desktop files and other files stored on the C drive) to another drive.
  • If you wish to migrate desktop files from the C drive to a non-system drive, you can cut the files or change the desktop file path to another drive. To do this, perform the following:
    1. Press Win+E to open File Explorer, right-click Desktop, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
    2. Click Location under Properties, click Move under the folder box, select a new folder, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the operation.
