Low wired Internet speed of devices connected to my HUAWEI router

Problem

The wired Internet speed is lower than the bandwidth when users connect their computer to a LAN port on the router.

Solution

Precautions for speed tests:

  1. Avoid testing your Internet speed when downloading resources, watching videos, playing games, or running other bandwidth-consuming apps.
  2. You are advised to test your Internet speed with a credible website (www.speedtest.net is recommended) or software and select the nearest speed test server.Speed test software may be unstable, so you should try testing multiple times and compare the results.
  1. Check whether the uplink network is normal.
    1. Set the working mode of the network adapter on the computer to Auto Negotiation. The following example uses a computer running Windows 10.
      1. Connect the computer to the router with a cable, then click in the lower right corner of the desktop and choose Network and Sharing Center on the computer.

      2. On the page that is displayed, click Change adapter settings.Right-click Local Area Connection and go to Properties > Configure from the shortcut menu to view the working mode of the network adapter. In the displayed dialog box, click the Advanced tab, then select Speed & Duplex from Property, and Auto Negotiation from Value.

    2. Connect the same computer directly to the optical modem/drop cable using the cable that was used to connect the router and the optical modem/drop cable. Then repeat the speed test to check whether the network speed reaches the bandwidth. If the problem persists, contact your broadband carrier to check whether the upstream bandwidth is normal. If the speed reaches the bandwidth, go to step 2.
  2. Check the network speeds of the WAN port (used for connecting the router to the uplink network) and LAN port (used for connecting the router to the computer) on the router.
Method 1: On the web-based management page
    1. Connect your phone/computer to the router's Wi-Fi network (or connect your computer to the network port of the router using a cable). In the browser's address bar, enter 192.168.3.1 and log in to the router's web-based management page.
    2. Go to More Functions > System Settings > Network port settings to check the speeds of the WAN port and the LAN port.

    • If the WAN port speed is 10 Mbps/100 Mbps, this indicates that the connection between the router and the uplink network is faulty.
      1. Connect the router and the uplink network with a Category 5 enhanced cable or higher, while ensuring that the connectors are plugged tightly. Then, test the speed again.
      2. If the problem persists, connect the uplink network to another port of the router and test the speed again.
    • If the WAN port speed is 1 Gbps and the LAN port speed is 10 Mbps/100 Mbps, this indicates that the connection between the router and the uplink network is normal. The LAN port speed refers to the negotiated speed between the router and devices connected to its network. If the LAN port speed is less than 1 Gbps, the issue may lie with the network cable or a speed limit applied to the router.
      1. Connect the router and the computer with a Category 5 enhanced cable or higher, while ensuring that the connectors are plugged tightly. Then, test the speed again.
  3. Check whether a speed limit has been applied to the router.
    1. Connect your phone/computer to the router's Wi-Fi network (or connect your computer to the network port of the router using a cable). In the browser's address bar, enter 192.168.3.1 and log in to the router's web-based management page.
    2. Click Manage Device, select a wired device from the drop-down list box, and check whether there is a speed limit. If there is one, disable it.
