When my HUAWEI laptop is being charged, the battery level decreases or a message displays indicating that the computer is discharging

Problem

When a HUAWEI laptop is being charged, the battery level decreases or a message displays indicating that the computer is discharging.

Cause

  • There are foreign objects in the power adapter's port or the charging cable is broken.
  • The power adapter or charging cable that does not come with the device is used.
  • Battery Protection is enabled on the laptop.
  • The laptop is heavily used or some third-party software is added to startup items.
  • Performance mode is enabled on the laptop.

Solution

  1. Check the appearance of the power adapter and charging cable.

If the power adapter or charging cable is aged, appears yellow, shows wear and tear, or has foreign objects in the port, back up your data, and take your device and proof of purchase to a Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.

  2. Check whether the power adapter and charging cable that come with the device are used.

The charging power of some power adapters and charging cables that do not come with the computer is less than the power consumed by the computer. As a result, the computer's battery level decreases while the computer is being charged. Use the power adapter and charging cable that come with the laptop to charge it via its charging port.

For other power adapters and charging panels that do not come with the device, they can also be used to charge the laptop if they have a USB-C port. However, they may deteriorate the battery and the charging speed is slow. To prevent your laptop from working improperly due to slow charging, it is recommended that you use the power adapter and charging cable that come with the laptop to charge the laptop.

  3. Use Battery Protection mode of Huawei PC Manager.

If you have enabled Battery Protection in Huawei PC Manager and set the maximum battery level of the laptop or enabled Smart charge, and the current battery level of the laptop is greater than the maximum charge capacitance that you set, the battery level will drop to the preset value, even if the laptop is being charged. When the battery level of the laptop is lower than the preset value, the laptop is charged again, and the battery level increases.

Enable Battery Protection in Huawei PC Manager based on the usage scenario, and select a charging mode as required. For details, see Using Smart charge/Battery Protection on my HUAWEI laptop.

  4. Exit power-intensive apps and disable automatic startup for third-party apps.
    1. Right-click the Windows Start icon in the lower left corner of the desktop and go to Task Manager > Processes > Background processes to check whether power-intensive software, such as games, CAD, and PS, is running in the background. If so, right-click the corresponding process and select End task.

If this is the first time you open Task Manager, see Opening or hiding the Processes tab in the Task Manager Window.

    2. Right-click the Windows Start icon in the lower left corner of the desktop, go to Task Manager > Startup, and disable all third-party software startup items. For details, see Disabling/Enabling startup processes on a HUAWEI computer.
  5. Try disabling Performance mode.

Performance mode allows for higher device performance. After this mode is enabled, the battery level decreases in some high-power-consumption scenarios, which is normal. When your computer is in Performance mode, do not let it run high-payload apps for a long time. You can also enable another power mode.

    • Method 1: Open Huawei PC Manager, go to Optimization > Performance tuning, and select Balanced mode.
    • Method 2: Press Fn+P to switch to Balanced mode.
