Unable to connect my HUAWEI phone/tablet to a computer via a USB cable

If your phone/tablet running EMUI 15.X or earlier cannot be connected to a computer using a USB cable, or the Use USB to pop-up window does not display, perform the following steps for troubleshooting.

1. Use another data cable

If your phone/tablet won't charge after being connected to a computer, the cable may be damaged. Try again using another data cable with the recommended specifications.

Other data cables that do not come with your device (such as the charging cable of a HUAWEI smart watch) may support charging only and cannot be used to transmit data.

2. Change the USB connection mode (applicable only to HarmonyOS 4.X and earlier versions)

Connect your phone/tablet to a computer, and select Transfer files after the Use USB to dialog box appears. Alternatively, swipe down to display the Notification Panel, touch Touch for more options, and select Transfer files. Then, view the files on the computer.

  • If the Use USB to dialog box does not pop up on your phone/tablet, open Settings, search for and access About phone/About tablet, and touch Build number seven consecutive times until the You are now a developer! message displays. Go to Settings > System & updates > Developer options, enable Always prompt when connecting to USB, and try again.
  • Developer options can only be enabled in Owner mode, and can't be enabled in PrivateSpace, when you have added at least one non-Owner account under Users, or when Digital Balance is enabled and set for child use.
  • Developer mode requires a basic understanding of the functions and features on your phone/tablet. Incorrect settings may cause your phone/tablet to malfunction. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you disable this mode during daily use.

3. Install HiSuite or Huawei PC Manager on your computer (applicable only to HarmonyOS 4.X or earlier)

It is recommended that you download and install HiSuite or Huawei PC Manager on your computer, and then update the driver.

4. If the issue remains unresolved

  • Use another USB port or another computer to test the connection. If the connection is successful, the USB port on the computer is likely incompatible or damaged.
  • If the issue persists, please call the Huawei customer service hotline for assistance. We will do our best to address your needs.
