Unable to run background apps on my HUAWEI phone/tablet

Perform the following to troubleshoot:

1. Check for updates

  • App update: Update the app to the latest version in AppGallery (some apps of earlier versions may not be compatible with the latest system version).
  • System update: Update the system to the latest version (some apps may have requirements on the system version).

2. Clean up storage space

  • One-tap optimization:
    1. Open Optimizer/Tablet Manager and tap Optimizer/Optimize.
    2. Once optimization is complete, Optimizer/Tablet Manager will display the results and recommended settings.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the settings.
  • Cleanup:
    1. Open Optimizer/Tablet Manager and tap Clean up.
    2. Once the scan is complete, tap Clean up next to the cleanup items.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions to delete unnecessary files and/or uninstall rarely used apps. For best results, it is recommended that you keep at least 20% free storage space on your device.

3. Check the following settings to prevent the app from being cleared

Items in Settings

Operation

Lock a background app

Open an app, enter the Recent tasks screen, and swipe down on the app card to lock it. Locked apps will not be cleared.

Allow an app to run in the background

Open Settings, search for and enter App launch, disable Manage automatically for the app, and enable Run in background in the prompt that is displayed.

Battery optimization settings

Open Settings, search for and access Battery optimization, tap Not allowed, select All apps, find the app that cannot run in the background, and set it to Don't allow.

Disable Power saving mode.

Go to Settings > Battery and disable Power saving mode.

Keep the network connected

Go to Settings > Battery > More battery settings and enable Stay connected when device sleeps.

Developer options settings

Open Settings, search for and access Developer options, disable Don't keep activities, and set Background process limit to Standard limit.

Notes:

  • It is strongly recommended that you disable Developer options during daily use to prevent device exceptions caused by accidental operations.
  • If it cannot be found, this feature has not been enabled. In this case, skip this step.

4. Close apps that are running in the background

Cause: Too many apps are running in the background, resulting in insufficient running memory. Some apps that have not been used for a long time will be closed by the system.

Operation: Close background apps you do not currently need.

5. Check for third-party management apps

Cause: Some third-party management apps may forcibly close background apps.

Operation: Uninstall such apps and check again.

6. If the issue persists

When a third-party app is inactive in the background for a long time, it is common for the app to stop running due to the system's sleep mechanism and the power saving policy of the app.

If the issue persists or you encounter any difficulties, please call the Huawei customer service hotline for assistance.
