Unable to wake up the screen using the mouse or any key after my HUAWEI computer has been in Standby mode for a long time

Problem

After the computer has been in Standby mode for a long time, the user cannot wake it up by using the mouse or pressing any key on the keyboard. They can only turn on or wake up the screen by pressing the Power button again.

Cause

The computer enters Hibernate mode after a long time of standby.

Hibernate mode is a power-saving mode designed by Microsoft for laptops. All data in the memory is stored in a specific space on the hard disk, and the power supply of some computer components is cut off. Hibernate mode is designed to restore the system to the state before the power supply was cut off. However, system recovery takes a longer time and takes up more storage space.

Solution

Your computer will automatically enter Hibernate mode after it has been in Sleep or Standby mode for a long time. This is an energy-saving mode designed by Windows. Under Hibernate mode, you can only press the Power button to wake up your computer. This does not indicate a quality issue.

If you want to wake up your device using the mouse or pressing any key after it has been in Sleep or Standby mode for a long time, connect your device to a power adapter and perform the following operations:

Method 1:

Set the screen and sleep time to Never by performing the following steps:

  1. Press and hold Windows+I to open Windows Settings, and go to System > Power & battery. Under Power, set Screen and sleep to Never.

Click here to configure Battery saver.

  2. Open Control Panel, choose to view by Large icons or Small icons. Then, go to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Power button and lid settings, and set When I close the lid to Do nothing. For details about how to open Control Panel, see Opening the computer's Control Panel

  3. Open Control Panel, go to Power Options > Change plan settings, and set Turn off the display and Put the computer to sleep to Never.

  4. If the issue persists, update the system to its latest version by referring to Updating to a higher version of Windows, and create and switch to the new power plan by referring to Create a power plan.

Method 2:

Delete the built-in hibernation files by referring to Deleting the hiberfil.sys file on the computer . In this case, the computer will not enter Hibernation mode after a long period of standby.

Hibernation is an important basic system function of Windows. After you delete the hibernation files, your computer will not be able to set up or enter Hibernation mode, which may cause your computer to heat up and shorten its battery life. Exercise caution when performing this operation. To restore the hiberfil.sys file in drive C, enter powercfg -h on in the Command Prompt dialog box and press Enter. Perform the following steps:

  1. Search for cmd in the search box on the taskbar and select Run as administrator.

  1. Enter powercfg -h on and press Enter.
